This award has been established to recognize faculty whose innovation in research, education, service, quality, or leadership has made a major impact at Grady. The Emory@Grady Innovations Award was for the development of a novel clinic called the Liver Alcohol Use Disorder (LAUD) clinic, which addressed an unmet need in Grady patients. Dr. Lom and her team recognized the rising prevalence of alcohol use disorder and alcohol-associated liver disease and knew that their patients needed a clinic focused on addressing alcohol use and providing evidence-based medical therapy to help them reach their goals. In analyzing the first year of data from the clinic, they have demonstrated decreased alcohol-related hospitalizations. The baseline hospitalization rate in the 6 months prior to their first visit was 48% and in the 6 months after their first visit decreased to 13%. They found that 68% of the patients started on a medication for AUD and of those 70% reported a decrease in their alcohol use and cravings. ![]() Dr. Winawer on WAGA-TV Dr. Neil Winawer was interviewed on WAGA-TV on life expectancy rising for the first time since COVID.
