A Leicester doctor whose “constant curiosity” propelled her rise to be among the world’s leading type 2 diabetes and obesity experts has been named a Dame in The King’s Birthday Honours List. Professor Melanie Davies CBE has become a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to global diabetes, research, policy and care management. Her national and international achievements are extensive and numerous. Professor Wasim Hanif, Professor of Diabetes and Endocrinology at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), has been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List. Professor Hanif, who has worked at UHB for three decades, was given this prestigious accolade for ‘services to diabetes and health inequalities’. People in the UK could soon have access to a pill version of Wegovy after regulators approved the medication for prescription use, making it the first oral GLP-1 weight-loss treatment of its kind to receive authorisation from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
