It’s officially back-to-school season across the United States. A new school year brings opportunities for learning, growth, and new experiences for students and families alike.

For refugees and other newcomers preparing for this transition, here are some RHS resources to support a successful start to the school year:

• The Housing Directory: Did you know the RHS Housing Directory contains several categories of resources and services? Users can access the Directory in all 50 states and D.C. to find housing counseling and support services, legal assistance and advocacy services, financial assistance programs, supportive community services, and more. Additional supportive community resources, including health care and childcare services, can be found through Refugee Welcome Collective’s State-by-State Resource Map.

• Budgeting and Financial Literacy for Renters Toolkit: A new school year can be a useful time to review and refresh the household budget. For many renters, housing costs make up the largest portion of monthly expenses. Available in Dari, Pashto, and Swahili, this toolkit covers basic financial terminology and concepts, how to create and update a budget, key information on credit, debt, and savings, and strategies for prioritizing expenses to support housing stability.

As families prepare for the year ahead, reliable information and community resources can help them make informed decisions and work toward their housing, financial, and family goals. We encourage refugees and newcomers to explore the resources available to support their success throughout the school year and beyond.

New Resources Added to Housing Directory of North Carolina

As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen and expand the Housing Directory, RHS identified service gaps in North Carolina, particularly in the state’s coastal communities. In response, we added more than 25 new resources to the Directory and will continue working to identify opportunities to improve coverage in North Carolina and across other state maps.
