Click here 12 September 2022 AGRS e-NewsDirector's MessageDear All, There has been another delay in the introduction of the voluntary Oral Examinations for current PhD students who enrolled before July 2022. We are now aiming to introduce the opt-in option from 2024 for those students. Oral examinations are still compulsory for all PhD students who have been enrolling from July 2022. Detailed rules and processes are under development and will be communicated before 2024. The second round of AGRS travel grants closed two weeks ago, and we understand that there are several conferences happening this/early next year that haven’t sent their confirmations of presentations yet. In order to give all the same chance, I would like to ask those students who didn’t apply for that reason but plan to travel before April 2023 to submit an application by 2nd October with the confirmation attached via CareerHub (adelaide.edu.au). Finally, I would like to encourage you to attend the exciting Three-Minute-Thesis (3MT) Final tomorrow (Tuesday) at 5:30pm in The Braggs. This is a great opportunity for our students to present their research to a wide audience. All Finalists have done an outstanding job in skilfully communicate their research impact in only three minutes. The winner will represent our University at the Asia Pacific 3MT competition. Best wishes, Doreen Krumbiegel Tip of the Month Update your Supervisor Details! Prior to completing the Annual Review (or any academic progress milestone), it is recommended that you log into MyAdelaide and review your candidature details including your supervision panel and milestone due dates. If any supervisor changes are required, please complete and submit a Change of Supervisor Details form and wait for the emailed confirmation by the Adelaide Graduate Research School that the change has been processed before you commence your Annual Review. This will ensure that your Annual Review goes to the correct supervisors in the workflow process for review and approval. It is particularly important that the email address we have recorded for any external supervisor is correct as provision of this email address is a prerequisite for the supervisor to be able to log into the online Annual Review of Progress system. Unique Student Identifier (USI) A Unique Student Identifier [USI] is a reference number that creates an online record of your qualifications attained in Australia. All students need a USI to receive a qualification upon successful completion from 2023. To create your USI, please visit the Australian Government’s website. The personal details you provide here must be exactly the same as those on record at the University of Adelaide. Once created, log into Access Adelaide and enter your USI in the Statistical Section page, under the ‘Students’ menu. Please contact Ask Adelaide if you require assistance. For international and offshore students, further information is available here; offshore international students are not required to provide a USI. The Annual Review of Progress The 2022 Annual Review is due on 31 October 2022. We ask that you check your candidature record in MyAdelaide to see whether you are required to complete this milestone. You will not need to do an Annual Review if: 1. You are in your first calendar year of candidature (i.e. you started in 2022) 2. You are enrolled in the Faculty or Arts or Sciences and have previously completed a Pre-Submission Review (PSR) or, have a PSR due within 3 months of the 31 October 2022 (please check MyAdelaide to confirm your milestone requirements) You will need to do an Annual Review if you have a 2022 Annual Review milestone, even if you are taking a Leave of Absence. Comprehensive information about the Annual Review can be found on the Adelaide Graduate School website, including our frequently asked questions. Two virtual Annual Review Q and A sessions are planned for 21 September and 18th October, with times and information on how to register to be circulated in the coming weeks and advertised on the AGRS news and events page. For those unable to attend on the day, the sessions will be recorded and made available on the AGRS web site. Research Student Handbook 2022-2023 The 2022-2023 Research Student Handbook is now available at: https://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduate-research/current-students/handbook. We recommend downloading the Handbook to your desktop, so you can access all information easily at any time. It is available electronically only, and the best way to use it is by either clicking items in the table of contents or by using the Find function and entering a keyword which is particularly useful for queries such as 'embargo' as it occurs in a few different places in the Handbook. Congratulations to Yoko Wang from the School of Biomedicine whose image was selected for the front cover! Postgraduate Scholarship OpportunitiesThe Adelaide Graduate Research School maintains a searchable database of available scholarship opportunities (both full scholarships and supplementary scholarships), funded by both the University of Adelaide and external funding bodies. While the majority of available scholarships are awarded as part of the standard admission and scholarship rounds for domestic and international students, some are awarded at different times throughout the year, and may have a separate application process. Visit the Postgraduate Scholarships website regularly for up to date information on current scholarship opportunities. Are you a woman in a STEM field? Scholarships are now available through the Elevate: Boosting Women in STEM scholarship program. Applications close 30 September 2022. For further information, including eligibility criteria, selection process and value of awards, please visit: Parliamentary Library Summer Research Scholarship The Parliamentary Library is seeking applications for its 2023 Summer Research Scholarship program. This opportunity will interest students with expertise in public policy, the environment, natural resources, foreign affairs, social policy, law, statistics, and economics. The Parliamentary Library is a unique research environment and the scholarships allow scholars to understand and work within this important national institution. Upon successful completion of the scholarship, an honorarium of $1,800 is paid. A copy of the application kit can be found at Parliamentary Library webpage. Three Minute Thesis Final Explaining years of research in three minutes, using only one PowerPoint slide. That’s the challenge 10 of our PhD students will tackle in the national Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Following fierce competition in the University heats, 10 finalists will compete for the main prize, with the winner going on to compete in the Asia Pacific finals. At this special Research Tuesdays event—which you can attend online or in person—our students develop their communication skills and share their amazing research.
