A Celebratory March for Life in a Post-Roe Environment

By Patrick Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald

You might call it a kinder and gentler March for Life, out from under the hostile shadow of the Supreme Court decision that provoked the annual protest. Roe v. Wade is gone, overturned last year by the same court. But the status of abortion availability in Hawaii remains the same. So work remains.

“Our goal is to rejoice and celebrate, celebrate the 50th anniversary of the March for Life” in the first such commemoration of the post-Roe era, said Valerie Streff, co-organizer of the march with her husband Deacon Gary Streff, addressing the estimated 500 gathered in the rotunda of the Hawaii State Capitol the afternoon of Jan. 20.

Absent were the usual kiosks promoting pro-life organizations and activities. “We are going to save that for another time,” Streff said. Instead, there was a single stage featuring religious musical groups. Read more...

Catholic Relief Services Lenten Rice Bowl

From the Office for Social Ministry

“Rice Bowl provides resources that “bring to life” the Lenten spirituality of prayer, fasting and almsgiving for families, parishes, and schools in our diocese, connecting us all with our global ‘ohaha.”
- Bishop Larry Silva 2023 Rice Bowl Letter

On Ash Wednesday, Christians worldwide will gather to begin a 40-day Lenten journey to come closer to God through encountering Christ in prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Rice Bowl is the Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services-CRS, which is the official relief and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The CRS Rice Bowl program is an opportunity to experience and understand how the journey and encounter with Christ through the traditional Lenten practices can connect with and impact our sisters and brothers in need here and around the world.

This Lent, the CRS Rice Bowl takes all on a journey to Honduras, the Philippines, and Kenya through Stories of Hope that demonstrate the ways Rice Bowl donations are changing lives. Since its inception in 1975, the CRS Rice Bowl program has raised more than $320 million to help prevent hunger and poverty in more than 100 countries each year. Twenty-five percent of Rice Bowl donations raised locally stays here in the islands, supporting social ministry projects that are part of the Diocese of Honolulu statewide initiative called “One Ohana: Food and Housing for All.Read more...

Damien and Marianne Catholic Conference Webinar, Feb 18

Saturday, February 18, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. (HST)

Join this special webinar "You Have to Hear the Voices to Feel the People" hosted by the Damien & Marianne Catholic Conference with Valerie Monson, former Executive Director of Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa.

Since Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa organized nearly 20 years ago, they have been dedicated to remembering each of the nearly 8,000 people who were taken from their families and forcibly isolated on the peninsula known as Kalaupapa. We remember them by their names, by their voices and by the extraordinary lives they have led. By including the voices of the people of Kalaupapa, the history of the settlement can be told in a much more inclusive and authentic way.

Pre-register for this complimentary webinar at www.dmcchawaii.org.
