The Christian Leadership Institute, which this year marked a decade of being held in the Diocese of Honolulu, has trained hundreds of high school students in Hawaii to “know their faith, communicate it with confidence and accompany others in their journey with Christ,” according to Lisa Gomes, director of the diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis.

Gomes said teens who have attended the weeklong institute, held each summer at St. Stephen Diocesan Center in Kaneohe, now serve in parish youth ministry and school campus ministry, as catechists for younger children, and in various liturgical ministries.

Gomes said the diocese continues to offer the institute because officials have seen firsthand how investing in young people transforms lives. Read more...

Robert M. Mondoy was a prolific musician, composer, director and arranger of sacred music who brought an enthusiastic infusion of island culture into his life’s work. Whether he was pounding on a pipe organ, strumming an ukulele or singing with full voice in churches across the diocese, Mondoy’s liturgical music beautifully blended styles and eras.

Mondoy, who was the Diocese of Honolulu’s longtime director of music, died July 3 in his Kalihi home at age 74 after a long illness.

He did not keep his talents to himself. A consummate teacher, Mondoy passed on his knowledge to proteges of all ages. He had a boundless passion to bring the joyful gift of music to others. Read more...

Sharing a meal with others is deeply rooted in the Gospel. Jesus gathered people around meals. There Christ welcomed the stranger, restored relationships, forgave sins, and reminded everyone that all are invited to the table of the Lord. Throughout the Gospels, meals became moments of encounter, healing, reconciliation, and hope.

In this Gospel spirit, on July 11 one week after celebrating Eucharist with migrants and refugees on the island of Lampedusa, Pope Leo XIV welcomed 200 poor and vulnerable guests to a special summer celebration in the Borgo Laudato Si papal gardens of Castel Gandolfo. Pope Leo’s pastoral ministry is continually encountering and celebrating with persons suffering on the margins, reminding the world that the Gospel comes alive when we are compassionately accompanying one another with dignity, gratitude, and love. KA HO‘OULU INNOVATION AWARDS
OFFERED BY THE HAWAI‘I CATHOLIC SCHOOLS OFFICE AND CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY

Overview: The National Catholic Education Association has an Innovation in Catholic Education annual awards program to foster creativity and growth in Catholic schools nationwide. In 2020 Hawaii Catholic Schools and Chaminade University initiated a new award to recognize innovation by our grades preK-12 educators.

The Ka Ho‘oulu Hawai‘i Catholic Education Innovation Award focuses on ‘Innovation for Mission’. There are several themes that will define this program:

1. Innovation as a call to remain relevant and attractive to our stakeholders, to continue to thrive in a competitive landscape, to best serve our students and to glorify God through our work.
2. An emphasis on capturing and celebrating the current creativity of our educators, as well as fostering new directions and initiatives.

Íñigo López de Oñaz y Loyola (Ignatius in Latin) was born at the Castle of Loyola in Azpeitia, in modern-day Gipuzkoa, Spain. After his parents’ deaths, Ignatius’ duties as a page for a noble family fed his dream of becoming a great military officer. Becoming a soldier at age seventeen, he fought in many battles and rose in rank over the next twelve years. Wounded in 1521, Ignatius lay bedridden for months as his leg healed. Desiring books on chivalry and romance to combat boredom, he instead was given The Life of Christ and Flowers of the Saints. Read more...
