Georgia Academy of Family Physicians Fall Family Medicine Weekend Our department was well-represented at the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians' 2019 Fall Family Medicine Weekend, November 14-16 in Stone Mountain. Dr. Oguchi Nwosu served as facilitator/speaker for the Women's Health Knowledge Self-Assessment. He also served as moderator for "Emerging Concepts in the Recognition and Management of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus" and "Assessment and Management of Insomnia, Recognizing the Role of Primary Care." In addition, Dr. Nwosu presented two posters, "A rare case of isolated cranial nerve six (CN VI) palsy due to poorly controlled diabetes mellitus" with medical student Christian Freeman and "Atypical case of gout arthropahty after a total knee arthroplasty" with Family Medicine resident Dr. Christine Tolu-Ajayi. North American Primary Care Research Group Annual Meeting Our department was also well-represented at the 47th North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) meeting November 16-20 in Toronto. Goodman, White, and Holman served as co-editors of a special supplement to The Gerontologist (June 2019) titled Opportunities for Cancer Prevention During Older Adulthood. Pictured below: Mary White, Dawn Holman, and Richard Goodman ![]() National Prevention of Diabetes Conference Nikhila Gandrakota, MPH candidate at Emory working with Dr. Megha Shah, presented her study "Social determinants of diabetes and hypertension among Asian immigrants," at the fourth National Conference on Prevention of Diabetes at Emory School of Medicine on November 16, 2019. Meet Leslie Johnson, MPH, PhD Dr. Leslie Johnson is a Post-Doctoral Fellow working with Dr. Mo Ali. She received her Master of Public Health from the Rollins School of Public Health in 2014, and her PhD in Behavioral Sciences and Health Education from Emory University in 2018. Dr. Johnson has particular expertise in qualitative research and her current research interests focus on implementation science and health service research as it relates to chronic disease management. Dr. Johnson also serves as an adjunct faculty in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education at the Rollins School of Public Health. Educational Investments for our future PA Program hosts annual Welcome Reception for Underrepresented Minority Mentors and MenteesThe PA Program sent in these photos for the new website and they are too good not to share! On July 26, as part of orientation, the PA Program hosted their annual reception for underrepresented minority mentors and mentees. This reception offers a chance for new PA students and previously paired PA students to meet their mentors. Jonie Fawley invited 3 PharmD students from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy to join Emory PA students for an Interprofessional Near-Peer Teaching session. The PharmD students had previously interacted with the PA Program during the fall farmworker project where they participated as AHEC Scholars. Their knowledge base, enthusiasm, and compassionate care made them a "must" to work with our PA students. The session was held during the Foundations of Medical Science module. The PharmD students provided an interactive session on antimicrobial therapy. They did an exceptional job and our students loved it! The event was organized by Portal de Salud, Inc. on October 12 at the Mision Catolica Nuestra Senora de Las Americas in Lilburn, GA. Our two teams (am/pm) were busy and did a fantastic job! Dr. Ted Johnson honored at Thanks A Million Gala ![]() On November 7, Dr. Ted Johnson was the Guest of Honor at the Thanks a Million Gala, an annual celebration and fund-raiser for the Thanks Mom & Dad Fund. The Thanks Mom & Dad Fund supports programs such as transportation services, home-modifications, and therapeutic programs that help older adults and caregivers thrive. Dr. Johnson was recognized for his years of patient care, research, education, and service work on behalf of older adults. As part of the tribute to Dr. Jonson's work, Thanks Mom & Dad Fund recorded a video of Dr. Johnson talking about his inspiration for his work with older adults - his parents. Pictured above: Dr. Ted Johnson and Dr. Susan Johnson Congratulations to Dr. Jenny Mascaro, who has been invited to be Plenary Faculty at the 2020 Mind and Life Summer Research Institute, an international, multi-disciplinary Institute for the study of contemplative practices. The topic is : Cultivating Prosocial Development Across the Lifespan: Contexts, Relationships, and Contemplative Practices. More information on the institute is available here. Dr. Jenny Mascaro has also been named Associate Editor for the journal Mindfulness. The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine Staff held a retreat on October 31 in the Jones Room at Woodruff Library. Staff from all of the divisions and programs attended and heard presentations on personal financial health, effective email communication, and avoiding burnout. Attendees received a Department polo shirt and group pictures were taken for the new website. Lunch was also served. It was an educational and fun day of team-building! Primary Care Consortium GrantsThe Emory Primary Care Consortium provides grants up to $2,500 to support any project that involves research, quality improvement, advocacy, development of clinical decision support tools, or educational activities in support of advancements in primary care (as it relates to patient safety, innovations in healthcare delivery, addressing disparities in healthcare, etc.). The next deadline for application submission is December 15. Awardees will be announced by January 15. Register now: Georgia CTSA Clinical and Translational Conference: February 27-29, 2020 Callaway Resort and GardensThe annual conference describes how the Georgia CTSA can support your research and increase grant funding; allows attendees to network with national leaders and NIH staff in translational science and education; and share research with others and develop new collaborations. Emory BIRCWH Program Deadline The Emory BIRCWH program, short for Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health, is a highly selective career development program for junior faculty interested in women's health research and/or sex/gender science. The ultimate goal of the BIRCWH program is to train junior faculty, through a mentored research and career development experience, to become independent investigators who use novel, interdisciplinary approaches to advance the science of women’s health and sex/gender research.
