CAREER DEVELOPMENT CORNER
Promotion Insights from our Faculty
Considering embarking on the faculty promotion process? Below, you can read valuable insights and experiences from two colleagues who have successfully navigated this path. Their advice will provide guidance, inspiration, and practical tips to support you in your own journey towards achieving your professional goals.
Hear what our faculty members have to say.
“My advice for junior faculty looking for promotion is multipronged. I would encourage everyone to keep their CV up to date. When you give a talk place it in your CV immediately. Also, everything has multiple landing places. One can recycle talks/abstracts of clinical vignettes/QI/ research projects at local, regional and national conferences. Additionally, after junior faculty get comfortable with their clinical roles, I would say that they should take the initial attitude of “never say no” to opportunities to collaborate or get involved nationally and regionally. Lastly, look to peers who have been
promoted or have gone through the process and pick their brains as well as go to the faculty CV review sessions. It’s best to have examples of how people went through the process to understand it best.”
“One piece of advice that was helpful in my journey was to start early. I started working towards this goal as soon as I came on as faculty- talk to anyone and everyone willing to share their promotion experience or offer advice on the same. Different perspectives can highlight opportunities you may not have considered and help you navigate potential pitfalls. Additionally, if you can't find a mentor within your department, it's beneficial to look outside—whether that's a mentor in a different department or even at adifferent institution... To my fellow faculty entering the promotion journey: Start early, be proactive, seek mentors, and leverage every opportunity
that aligns with your long-term goals. The journey may feel challenging at times, but with a strategic approach, you can ensure you're on the path to success.”
