Creativity Workshop: Revealing hidden value using Creativity and Evolution When: 25 May 2023, 12:30pm - 3:00pm Workshop Outline: Creativity and Evolution drive change our world. However positive change hinges on our ability to sense and communicate hidden value within everyday situations. Yet we are too often stuck in our habits and lack energy for curiosity and exploration. We need to embrace life as a Moving Puzzle. Workshop Objectives: Drawing on 10+ years of diverse coaching experience, combined with 15+ years working in Defence, Dean will facilitate participants through a series of movement situations based on concepts drawn from cognition, play, neuroscience, mindfulness, biology, and psychology. Participant Outcomes: Within your life and studies you will have the ability creatively and playfully reveal hidden qualities in yourself, objects, relationships and environment. You will be able to better tackle uncertainty and challenges in your life. The 3MT information session When: 30 May 2023, 10:30am - 11:30am Can you sell your thesis in just 3 minutes? The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an annual skills development activity that challenges Higher Degree by Research students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes using a single PowerPoint slide. It is not an exercise in trivialising or ‘dumbing-down’ research; the oration should engage the audience without reducing research to entertainment value alone. This information session will provide information on the rules and requirements of the competition, the competition format and how to successfully sell your thesis in 3 minutes! For more information, refer to the University of Adelaide 3MT website Reviving your Life while Doing an HDR When: 1 June 2023, 1:00pm - 3:00pm In this final session of the Mental Health and Wellbeing series, Jane Turner Goldsmith will provide the tools needed to pick yourself up or ‘revive’ when facing common concerns for HDRs, including anxiety and stress. This session will include a range of experiential exercises to relax the body, including breathing, meditation, mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation and visualisation. Register here. Structuring an HDR Thesis When: 5 June 2023, 10:30am - 1:00pm Writing a thesis is an enormous task and it can be difficult to know where to start, or what to do next. This workshop is designed to guide you through the process of structuring and writing the different components of a thesis, from the different chapters or sections, through to paragraphs and the use of different sentence structures for specific purposes. Throughout the workshop, you'll be provided with practical tips to help you create a template for your thesis and take productive steps towards writing it up. Register here Preparing for the 3MT: Everything you need to know When: 6 June 2023, 10:30am - 1:00pm Designed for any HDR student who is thinking about participating in the 3MT® competition, this workshop explains what the 3MT is, how it works, and provides strategies and suggestions to help you win over the judging panel. Do you want to know how to make your presentation memorable, and cope with the inevitable anxiety that comes with presenting? In this session, Hugh Kearns will share all the best ‘tips and tricks’ to be successful in the 3MT. Register here. Please note: all HDR students are welcome to attend this session - you do not need to have registered as a 3MT competitor. Though delivered online, this is a workshop, not a lecture, and breakout rooms will be used so that students can interact with each other. Please ensure audio and video is configured so you can participate. We recommend using a laptop or desktop computer, not a phone for this to work well. The Australian research funding landscape When: 8 June 2023, 1:00pm - 2:00pm This webinar provides an overview of the Australian research funding landscape, including the large competitive grant schemes, smaller grants, prizes & awards, as well as industry funded research opportunities. The webinar will also provide early career researchers with tips and tricks to find appropriate funding sources to support their research. Register here Other Training & EventsData Manipulation and Visualisation in R R is quickly gaining popularity as a programming language for data scientists and researchers. It has an excellent ecosystem including RStudio and a massive online community of users for support. In this intermediate-level, live coding, and researcher-focussed workshop we will use the dplyr, tidyr, and ggplot2 libraries to manipulate, reshape, and visualise data. NewsArtificial Intelligence Library Guide The library has released a How-To guide on Artificial Intelligence which provides information about using generative AI tools for study in an ethical, responsible and evaluative way. The guide provides an introduction to some of the AI tools available, how to cite and acknowledge their use, and the use of such tools in research articles intended for publication. 2023 Visualise Your Thesis Competition Registrations are now open for the 2023 Visualise Your Thesis competition. HDRs are challenged to present their research in a sixty second visual display. First prize wins $1000 and will go on to compete in the International online competition. All successful submissions also qualify for 5 CaRST points. To register your interest, visit the Visualise Your Thesis webpage before 29 May. Volunteer opportunity for STEM students - Inspiring Women Program The Diversity Team in SET are looking for volunteers to assist in our Inspiring Women program. This program’s goal is to engage primary aged girls in STEM activities in a hands on and engaging way. We are looking for a number of current students to support our girls through the STEM activities by encouraging and giving gentle nudges in the right direction if they get a little distracted or confused. These students can be undergraduate or post graduate students but will need to be able to travel to North Terrace campus to contribute to the program. Lunch will be provided to volunteers.
