Auckland win Men's National Intercentre15-16 October 2022 Congratulations, Auckland is crowned Men's National Incentre champions for 2022. Wearing the Auckland colours of navy and white, Mike Bradshaw, Martin Dixon, Mike Galloway, Tony Grantham, Jamie Hill, Aiden Takarua, Nick Thompson, and Adam Wishnoski were in great form throughout the weekend. The Men's section comprised six regional qualifiers from the Bay of Plenty, Hawke's Bay, Wellington, Marlborough & Southland. At the end of day one, Auckland was level pegging with Wellington, each on equal match points & game points. On day two, in the final, Wellington took first blood with a win in the Pairs, while the Auckland Fours landed a big win leaving it to the Singles to determine which centre would be victorious in the title. It was pressure bowling in the closing stanza for Seamus Curtin and Mike Galloway as their point-by-point scoring inched toward the magic total of 25. Mike was exceptional as he held his nerve, bowling to a win 25-24 - a match befitting a national final. To Jamie Hill's surprise, he was presented with a Silver Star - congratulations on your achievement Jamie, it was a fantastic way to end the competition. Thanks to all the players competing, and a special thanks to Wellington for being terrific opponents in the final. Thanks also to Browns Bay Bowling Club for being such a great host. Contributed by Noeline Sadgrove Tessa is Balmoral's Singles Champ15-16 October 2022 It was another big weekend on the greens at Balmoral as we saw two further championships play out to their conclusions. The Women's Championship Singles saw Tess Farley play Marika James in the final, and with both players experienced singles finalists over the last few seasons a good match was on offer. The final was a close match, with the lead swapping back and forth. With Marika leading 11-10, Tessa made her move to pick up a four to get ahead and then controlled the mat to run out the winner 21-11. Well done to both players and to our new women's players Katy Merrett and Val Arndt who stepped up to take on the more experienced players in this year's event. Contributed by Graham Farley Pt Chevalier Handicap Singles15-16 October 2022 Our Handicap Singles was played last weekend, our first season competition. Competitors had two lives and the games were 21 ends, with handicaps ranging from 0 to 12. It was evident after round one that we would see at least one new face in the final. Kevin Morris and Dale Knight, finalists for the last two years, both lost their first-round match and faced each other in round two. After a tense battle, Kevin Morris came out the victor. Kevin carried on his winning way through Day One, and after four rounds, was one of five players left standing. The others making it through Day One were John Petelo, Steve Hoeft, Stephen Campbell (with 2 lives) and the last lady, Jo McKenna. John was too strong for Steve Hoeft, as was Stephen Campbell in his match against Jo. Kevin had the bye. With only three remaining, it was John’s turn for a bye. Stephen got off to the best start against Kevin leading 15-6 after 10. Kevin could not catch up, leaving a final between John Petelo and Stephen Campbell. The final was a close encounter until end 15. Stephen was four ahead when a misdirected drive by John saw John remove all of his bowls from the rink, gifting Stephen a four. Stephen held onto his lead to win the title with both lives intact. Stephen was dominant over the weekend. It was only his game against Steve Hoeft on Day One when he needed his handicap to help him across the line. Congratulations Stephen Campbell on a well-deserved, very consistent win.
