Bishop's Homily for the Twenty-Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time

[Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, Honolulu]

When I was a pastor, I recall a couple coming to me for advice. They were having difficulties in their marriage and decided to go to marriage counseling. At the end of their first session, the counselor acknowledged their problems and recommended divorce. They came to me to tell me that they did not want to divorce – which is why they went to a counselor in the first place – and asked if I could refer them to a counselor who valued the commitment of marriage. I never met the counselor who recommended divorce, but I would say that counselor was caught up in a notion that is not new, but that is very popular these days, that if something is good, there should be no suffering involved. If one has to suffer or struggle, many believe, you should just walk away from the situation.

This is the heart of the exchange between James and John and Jesus. They wanted glory on their own terms, a special place in his kingdom, sitting at his right and left. Jesus brings them down to reality, asking if they are willing to suffer as he would suffer.  Read more...

Land Sale Agreement Will Bring ‘Critical Funds’ to Diocese

o Kahala Nui, a retirement community, next to Mary, Star of the Sea Church and School.

This land lease agreement provided a home for Kahala Nui’s apartments and wide range of life care services for seniors, and also benefited Mary, Star of the Sea, which received new buildings for a gym, early learning center, business offices and a clergy residence as part of the deal.

The relationship between the diocese and Kahala Nui is now entering a new phase with the announcement Oct. 3 of a land sale agreement expected to close in the last quarter of this year.

“This agreement enables Kahala Nui to gain ownership of the land under its facilities, allowing for greater stability and flexibility in its long-term planning and development, while at the same time, providing the Diocese of Honolulu with the critical funds needed to ensure the Catholic Church can continue ministering to our faithful and community for many generations to come,” Bishop Larry Silva said in a press release. St. Marianne, An Example of True Aloha

(billsoPHOTO, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons.)

From the Office for Social Ministry

“At a time when little could be done for those suffering from this terrible disease, Marianne Cope showed the highest love, courage and enthusiasm. She is a shining energetic example of the spirit of her beloved Saint Francis.” Pope Benedict XVI Canonization of St. Marianne Cope of Molokai’i 10/21/2012

St. Marianne of Moloka’i lived her life as a prayer giving thanks to God by encountering and imitating Christ through serving with the most vulnerable. This October, we celebrate the 12th anniversary of her canonization on Mission Sunday, October 21, 2012. This was a special prayerful moment during the Synod on New Evangelization, when more than 80,000 pilgrims from around the world—including nearly 300 from Hawaii—gathered in Rome to honor seven new “missionary” saints recognized for witnessing to Jesus by their love of God through action. Known as “Mother to Outcasts,” St. Marianne evangelized the way St. Francis said: “Preach the Gospel at all times; and use words if necessary.” Read more...

Couples for Christ Weekend - I Will Hold You Forever

The weekend August 31-Sept 1, 2024 was a very blessed weekend for 13 Couples for Christ, including a couple from Maui, who attended the CFC Hawaii Marriage Enrichment Retreat Part 1 at St Stephen Diocesan Center; service team came from Canada and California.  The retreat was a time of discovery for those who attended the first time and an assessment for those attended it as a refresher whether we have grown in our relationship.  But all in all, a time to renew, recommit and rekindle our love to our respective spouses and to reinforce passion and romance in our marriages.  The retreat dynamics include praise and worship, prayers and scriptures, talks, couple discussions, fellowship, Celebration of the Holy Mass, and blessing of couples. Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

From Most Reverend Clarence (Larry) Silva
Bishop of Honolulu

General Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate  Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

While this very important celebration is usually on December 8, since that is a Sunday of Advent this year, all the Masses for December 7/8 must be for the Second Sunday of Advent. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to Monday, December 9. Although the Paulist Press Ordo says it is not a day of obligation this year, in order to give due honor to our national patroness, and since the Diocese of Honolulu only observes this Solemnity and the Solemnity of Christmas as holy days of obligation, I hereby decree that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is to be celebrated  on Monday, December 9, 2024, as a HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION in the Diocese of Honolulu. Pastors are to schedule Masses so that all may observe this holy day of obligation and to publicize that it is a holy day of obligation well in advance of December 9. Any Vigil Mass celebrated on Sunday, December 8 is to be a Mass for the Second Sunday of Advent, not for the Immaculate Conception.

This decree is to be promulgated as law through publication in the Hawaii Catholic Herald and in the diocesan eNews.

Given at the Office of the Bishop on September 26, 2024.

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Saint of the Week

Saint John Paul II
1920–2005
Memorial – October 22

Karol Józef Wojtyła, the future Saint John Paul II, was born in the Polish town of Wadowice, the youngest of three children, just two years after Poland regained its independence after 123 years of partitions and foreign rule by the Russian, Austrian, and Prussian empires. As a youth, he was known to his friends as Lolek, an affectionate form of his name Karol (Charles). Though Poland was free as he grew up, Karol suffered many hardships. He never knew his older sister who died just hours after she was born. When Karol was eight, his mother died, and when he was twelve, his older brother died, leaving only Karol and his father, Karol, Sr.. Despite these tragedies, Karol’s father had a profound impact upon his life. Read more...
