[Cathedral of Orvieto, Italy]
Yesterday I was watching a young woman trying to cross a busy boulevard in Rome. She held her hand up to stop traffic, but all the drivers ignored her. At first I thought she may have been hailing a taxi, but, no. Meanwhile, while she was focused on stopping traffic, other people were just stepping into the crosswalk and stopping traffic simply by crossing in front of it. Like prayer, you have to put yourself on the line. You have to have some skin in the game. It is a relationship with God that is most important, and confidence in his love and his desire to give us what is best – in his own time and in his own way.
I recall some years ago a friend of mine, who was a very devout Catholic, stopped going to Mass for a while. I thought this was very uncharacteristic for him, so I asked him what was going on. He told me that his brother had recently died in a tragic accident, and he was very upset that God took him, so he decided he would not go to Mass. Read more...

15 Years On, Seed of ‘Hope’ Continues to Flourish

The Friendly Place, located in Kailua-Kona, includes several initiatives ranging from emergency shelter to permanent supportive housing. (Lisa Dahm / Hawaii Catholic Herald)

Since 2010, Hope Services Hawaii has worked to house people who are unsheltered across Hawaii island — from kupuna to families and everyone in between. Not only is the agency helping people in bigger towns of Hilo and Kona, it is also filling housing needs in quiet areas, like Honokaa and Pahoa.
Now, Hope Services, which is a nonprofit organization of the Catholic Church in Hawaii, has about 130 staff members working across Hawaii island. Its seven established sites include shelters, emergency housing, integrated care hubs and even an assisted community treatment program for people who do not know they are a danger to themselves but need to access treatment. Dilexi Te: Pope Leo’s Tender Call to Love Without Limits

From the Office for Social Ministry
“I Have Loved You” - Pope Leo XIV, Dilexi te
When Pope Leo XIV signed his apostolic exhortation Dilexi te — “I have loved you” — on October 4, 2025, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, he extended a heartfelt invitation for all to rediscover the very heart of the Gospel by seeing Christ in the faces of the poor.
This message is both deeply traditional and refreshingly bold. Building on and expanding the last document by Pope Francis’s Dilexit nos on the Sacred Heart, Pope Leo makes it wholly his own — what Cardinal Michael Czerny called “100% Francis and 100% Leo.” Dilexi te is an inspiring reminder that love isn’t just something to talk about — it’s something to live, just as Christ did, in deep solidarity with the poor. As Pope Leo reminds us, “in this call to recognize him in the poor and the suffering, we see revealed the very heart of Christ, his deepest feelings and choices, which every saint seeks to imitate.” Read more...

Talks for Youth and Adults
|
 |
| |
Mondays and Thursdays in October at 7:00 p.m.
St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kaimuki
All are welcome to join these talks for youth and adults which are an announcement of the Good News where Christ has an answer to the difficult situations we experience and gives us the possibility of love and forgiveness. This will be presented by the missionary team of the Neocatechumenal Way in Hawai’i: Jonathan & Nazarena Stenger with their seven children, Fr. John Wadeson, and Paulo Da Mata a seminarian for the Diocese of Brooklyn.
The Neocatechumenal Way is a post-baptismal catechumenate for adults to help people grow in their faith by living with the Scriptures and liturgy so as to experience it in small communities within the structure of the Parish. Pope Saint John Paul II wrote in a letter: “I acknowledge the Neocatechumenal Way as an itinerary of Catholic formation, valid for our society and for our times.”
For more information, please contact Jonathan and Nazarena Stenger at (808) 268-3993.

ʻOhana Mass, Oct 25
|
 |
|
Saturday, October 25, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “ʻOhana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 p.m. at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

National Catholic Youth Conference, Nov 21
|
 |
|
This November, our young people are being invited into something truly special. For the first time, Pope Leo XIV will engage in a live digital dialogue with young people in the United States. This moment will take place during the 2025 National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC), and we want every young person in our diocese to have the opportunity to be part of it, whether attending in person or joining virtually. We encourage your parish or school to register and share the word of the NCYC Digital Experience, a free three-part journey that offers:
-
A live broadcast of the Papal Dialogue on Friday, November 21
-
An exclusive pre-event on November 11
-
Follow-up resources for schools, youth ministries, and families
Can’t join live? A same-day recording will be available to all who register, making it easy for any parish or family to participate on their own schedule. We know the Church is stronger when young people feel heard. This event offers a powerful opportunity to affirm their voices and strengthen their sense of belonging. Register your group today at NCYC.us/digitalexperience.

Saint of the Week
Saint John Paul II
1920–2005
Memorial - October 22
Karol Józef Wojtyła, the future Saint John Paul II, was born in the Polish town of Wadowice, the youngest of three children, just two years after Poland regained its independence after 123 years of partitions and foreign rule by the Russian, Austrian, and Prussian empires. As a youth, he was known to his friends as Lolek, an affectionate form of his name Karol (Charles). Though Poland was free as he grew up, Karol suffered many hardships. He never knew his older sister who died just hours after she was born. When Karol was eight, his mother died, and when he was twelve, his older brother died, leaving only Karol and his father, Karol, Sr.. Despite these tragedies, Karol’s father had a profound impact upon his life. Read
