Grantham and Atkinson Prevail in National Champ of Champ Singles
Mt Albert representative and World Bowls' Blackjack Tony Grantham has continued to stamp his mark as one of the most consistent singles players in the country, while upcoming Paritutu star Briar Atkinson shows she is one to watch, as both players took out the National Champion of Champion Singles on Sunday. Hosted at the Bowls Hastings indoor venue, more
than 20 centre champions (22 men, 20 women) converged to contest the final stage of a three-tier competition, with play first commencing at club championship level throughout the season. The format required three out of four wins to progress to post-section play, with seven women and nine men qualifying through.
It's All in the State of Mind
On Sunday 2 July, I had the pleasure, and pride, to watch the Finals of the Bowls NZ Club Men's Singles from Bowls Hastings. A game both players deserved to be in, and only one could win. A close-fought game throughout and it was only until the last few ends when the game changed. The game reminds me of a poem, "It's All in the State of Mind" by Walter D. Wintle...
If you think you are beaten, you are,
If you think that you dare not, you don't,
If you'd like to win, but you think you can't, It's almost certain you won't. If you think you'll lose, you've lost,
For out in the world you'll find
Success begins with a fellow's will—
It's all in the state of mind.
These two paragraphs bring memories of Pat Walsh, a longtime supporter and friend of the Bridge Park Bowling Club (and the association continues to this day by his family). Congratulations Tony, you have done yourself proud, your club Mt Albert proud, and Bowls Auckland proud. You showed composure and focus in the last few ends, which is all inspiring bowlers should note. You were focused, knew what you needed to be done and did not hesitate when you stepped onto the mat. __ Greame Scott

Rangatahi National U26 5-a-Side
Friday 14 July - Sunday 16 July
In just over a week Bowls Wellington will host some of the best young talent from seven teams from across the country converging to Naenae Bowling Club to compete for the National Under 26 5-a-side. Age is no barrier to talent, with Commonwealth Games medalists, National title holders, and BlackJack squad members among the field of competitors. Adam Baillie, Liam Hill, Ashleigh Jeffcoat, David Motu, and Aiden Takarua will represent Auckland. Bowls Auckland Performance Lead Alison Rennie said, "Last season we initiated a development programme to
provide bowlers with playing opportunities outside of our existing Auckland Centre and High Performance events. This event has been initiated by Bowls Wellington, led by former BlackJack, Blake Signal, to showcase the young talent playing their way toward a position in our High Performance squad. Bowls Auckland congratulates the team selected and we look forward to good results."
The next National Champ of Champs event is the Pairs, on 7-9 July at Hopes Dunedin Stadium. Pt Chevalier's Steve Hoeft and Nick Thompson's first-round match at 3pm Friday is against Roger Glendinning, and Jared Trevathan from Geraldine Bowling Club. Sue Curran and Catherine Bien from St Heliers have a bye first up. They will meet Mata Frankum, and Julie Robins from Waimate Bowling Club at 10.20am. Best of luck
and all the best to both teams. You can keep up to date with all the results by visiting Bowls NZ Champ of Champs Hub...
Wednesday 7th June 2023 turned out to be a fine afternoon to play indoor bowls at the New Lynn Bowling Club. Always keen to find an opportunity to get our local Rosebank business employees out enjoying a bit of exercise along with socializing with the neighbours is part of the growing toolbox created by the RBA’s Rosebank Wellbeing Collab.
