Meeting Gernsbach

Dear members and friends of ZELLCHEMING,

In mid-September, Petra Hanke, Managing Director of ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH, met with Andre Müller, General Manager of the Papierzentrum in Gernsbach as well as Executive Member of the Board and Deputy General Manager of the association DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE, to discuss possible cooperation. Andre Müller has held his current position at the Paper Centre since July 2020 and has already been working there since the beginning of 2020. He was in Wiesbaden as a participant of the ZELLCHEMING Expo 2022 and Petra Hanke now travelled to Gernsbach for a return visit.

Both sides agreed that ZELLCHEMING and the Paper Centre should strengthen their cooperation and seek to work more closely together. Further training seminars or specialist conferences have already been mentioned as possible starting points (see also the reference to the specialist conference on digitalisation in the paper industry on 01/22.12.22 in Gernsbach under the heading "From the network"). The Paper Centre is also planning to be present at ZELLCHEMING from 2023 as part of the "Meeting Point Future".

"I am very pleased about this development and the openness to jointly advance important topics for our industry," says Petra Hanke. "ZELLCHEMING and the Paper Centre are natural partners, when we support and promote each other, the whole industry benefits. We want to build on this conviction!".

Award Walter Brecht Memorial Medal

On the occasion of its 116th Annual General Meeting 2022 in Wiesbaden, the Association of Pulp and Paper Chemists and Engineers awarded

Dipl.-Ing. Manfred Stemmer

the Walter Brecht memorial medal donated in honor of Walter Brecht.

f.l.t.r.: Dr. Ulrich Wittmann, Chairman ZELLCHEMING Association, Manfred Stemmer, Moritz J. Weig, Managing Director Moritz J. Weig GmbH & Co. KG, Prof. Dr. Helga Zollner-Croll, Deputy Chairwoman ZELLCHEMING Association

Manfred Stemmer started his professional life with an apprenticeship as a board maker at the former Baienfurt paper mill, later Feldmühle. After two years of experience as a machine operator, he started his studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and graduated as Dipl.-Ing FH of paper production.

Mr. Stemmer looks back on decades of work in board production at the Arnsberg board mill of the former Feldmühle as an operating assistant. There, he held various positions from plant manager to sole managing director for 40 years. With the takeover of the mill by the Swedish Stora, his international activities began. After the change of ownership to the Canadian Cascades, his tasks expanded to become the technical director of all European cartonboard mills and the technical coordination Canada - Europe. 10 years later, the Arnsberg mill was integrated into the Italian cartonboard group Reno de Medici. Manfred Stemmer remained Technology Manager on the European Board.

Despite the many international tasks, he never relinquished responsibility for the Arnsberg mill and represented its interests sustainably and successfully in the local environment and also at the Group headquarters in Sweden, Canada and Italy.

He has passed on his wide-ranging experience and knowledge of cartonboard production in many publications and lectures and has contributed to the various ZELLCHEMING technical committees on cartonboard, recovered paper and the recycling sub-committee.

With the award of the Walter Brecht Monument, ZELLCHEMING would like to honor Mr. Manfred Stemmer's commitment over many years.

The recording of the award ceremony is available on our YouTube channel.

New initiative: The Cup Collective

Huhtamaki and Stora Enso have joined forces to launch a new paper cup recycling initiative: The Cup Collective.

The programme, which is the first of its kind in Europe, aims to recycle and capture the value of used paper cups on an industrial scale. Initially the programme will be implemented across the Benelux. With the aim of setting new standards for paper cup collection and recycling in Europe, The Cup Collective has issued an open invitation for partners from across the supply chain to get involved in working towards a systemic European solution.

The EU has set recycling target for paper and board packaging of 85% by 2030. Paper cups are recyclable but need to be collected before they can be turned into new paper products. The Cup Collective initiative will create the necessary collection infrastructure to significantly increase the recycling rate of wood-fibre in paper cups. Above all, the programme will make it as easier for consumers and businesses to collect used paper cups to be regenerated into valuable recycled raw material.

The first paper cup collection bins will be available in restaurants, cafés, office buildings and transport hubs in the Brussels and Amsterdam metropolitan areas. The Cup Collective aims to recycle half a billion paper cups in the first two years and, as it is designed to be scalable, has the capacity to significantly increase recycling volumes in Europe.

Those with an interest in taking part in this exciting new programme should reach out here:  https://thecupcollective.eu.

Recycling and paper for recycling are also at the heart of the work in the ZELLCHEMING Technical Committees.

Voith optimizes design of the OnQ FormingSens

For maximum user-friendliness and reliability, the experts at ZELLCHEMING member company Voith have further optimized the design of the OnQ FormingSens.

The system has already proven itself for many years with paper manufacturers of different grades, and is in use more than 100 times in the forming section. Thanks to microwave technology, the leading solution measures fluctuations in water weight precisely, reliably and in real time. Based on this information, papermakers can systematically improve their settings, achieve a stable dry content at the end of the forming section, and utilize the maximum dewatering capacity in the press section. At the same time, the optimized settings ensure less wear on the forming fabrics and ceramics. In addition, vacuum and drive energy can be reduced, which was confirmed, among others, by a customer of a Central European installation for packaging papers. Here, OnQ FormingSens reduced energy costs by around 130,000 euros annually and paid for itself well under a year.

"Compared to the previous OnQ FormingSens, the new generation has a significantly longer service life, flexible connectivity to existing process control systems, and improved mechanical stability, enabling extremely reliable measurement results," says the responsible project manager, Jörg Spindler, Manager Actuator Development at Voith Paper.

The new design focuses on a solid, low-vibration construction, as well as a simplified electrical design. Among other things, the mechanical mount has been revised so that the operator can now fine-tune the penetration depth from outside the machine via a waterproof mechanical gear. The sensor mount can be flexibly positioned on various existing dewatering elements in the former.

From the technical committees

Meeting technical committee Recovered Paper Utilization

The ZELLCHEMING Technical Committee RECO (recovered paper utilization) and the Technical Subcommittee TECH (recycling technology) dedicated their penultimate meeting to the following topics: availability of recovered paper, recovered paper composition and sorting analyses, development of alternative raw material sources, refining of paper, board and cardboard with alternative barriers and their recyclability, and further development of sorting systems.

The next joint meeting of the RECO together with the subcommittee took place at the end of September.
