September 2022 - enjoy our new look! No images? Click here Welcome to our September issue of Daffodil News. As spring is in the air we welcome the blooming of the beautiful daffodil flowers that have laid dormant over winter, bringing hope in our fight against cancer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers and staff for their generous giving of time and effort for one of our major fundraisers, Daffodil Day. Promoting cancer awareness and prevention is a key priority for Cancer Council ACT, and as such, we highly value the programs that we run - in particular this month our SunSmart schools program, in collaboration with ACT Health. We are pleased to acknowledge that this month, we welcomed Majura Primary School as the 100th school in the ACT to join the SunSmart schools program. She was able to see her GP the next day, who had experience with lymphoma and acted right away to get Sharon in for further biopsies, scans and tests. Sharon was pleased to not only have caught it early but was also impressed by her quick acting and dedicated medical team who took her through several inconclusive biopsies, and a slice biopsy from the removed lump and had her diagnosed and into treatment in just six weeks. Sharon’s treatment plan was tailored to her health and fitness level, allowing her to have shorter, if more intense treatment, which felt lucky to manage rather well. Hair loss came as a part of Sharon’s chemotherapy, and although she was rather comfortable with her bald head, Sharon was keen to have wigs as an option. Sharon came to Cancer Council ACT and was delighted by the fast response, friendly service and wide range of wigs and headwear available. “I knew I wanted grey and thought that there wouldn’t be much in my style, that there would be more older looking styles. I felt genuine excitement when we knew we had found the one! I’ve had so many compliments.” Sharon is our Wig Ambassador and uses her social media channels to share her experiences and support others along their cancer journey.
