Wrapping up a busy and challenging 2022, we welcome the newly elected Executive Committee for 2023. A special thank you to our Patron, The Honourable Virginia Bell AC, for chairing the Adjourned AGM on 13 December 2022. The Executive Committee looks forward to launching the 2023 program in February. I would like to thank the outgoing Executive Committee for their exceptional hard work in 2022. A notable thank you to our outgoing Secretary, Danielle Verde, who navigated us through turbulent Covid waters and assisted the Association to pivot online. Danielle's outstanding hard work during her time as Secretary was invaluable to the Association. Some of our Executive Committee members have been on the committee for a number of years and their assistance and insight has been invaluable to the Association. I would like to thank Holly Lam, Larissa Andelman, Sher Campbell, Ruwinie Delgoda, Irene Horan and Fay Calderone for their contribution and acknowledge their stepping down from the committee. In the closing of this very special year, our 70th Anniversary, we fondly recall our 70th Anniversary Gala Dinner. We are deeply appreciative of those who assisted in organising the event, and for our sponsors, supporters, award winners, members and distinguished guests for attending to make the night so special. This year has shown us the importance at ensuring the longevity of this important Association to maintain its presence and success. Thank you to Renée Bianchi for leading the Association as President between 2020-2022, a difficult period without doubt and Renée led the Association with her usual grace and ease. During Renée’s presidency the Association continued our cornerstone events such as the Janet Coombs lunch for new women barristers with the Women Barristers Forum, International Women’s Day, our Awards gala event and Celebrating Women in the Judiciary; we launched new sub-committees and new events which included, our new Thursday night social networking drinks, Annual Trivia Night and our online lunctime CPD program. Renée continued relationships with likeminded associations such as the Women Barristers Forum, Asian Australian Lawyers Association, University of Technology Sydney, and the University of Sydney to name a few. Renée also worked with our Newcastle and Wollongong Regional Chapters and encouraged their events and growth. I look forward to working with Renée as Immediate Past President in 2023 to continue the fantastic work of the Association. We wish Renée well in her new appointment as NSW Delegate to the Australian Women Lawyers where she is Vice President; no doubt there will be amazing things to come. We would like to thank Kathryn McKenzie and her company, Business Angel Services Pty Ltd, for her service to the Association for 19 years. Kathryn has made an impact on many people’s lives and the Association over the years. We thank Kathryn for her assistance over the years and acknowledge the significant contribution she has made to the Newcastle Regional Chapter. We also acknowledge those within our membership who have sadly left us this year including Janet Coombs AM and Cecily Backhouse KC, both founding members. Our thoughts are with those families at this time of the year. We are deeply appreciative and thank the Law Society of New South Wales for their ongoing support as our Principal Sponsor, the NSW Bar Association as a Main Sponsor, and the many firms and organisations that have supported and hosted events. Thank you to our speakers that have given their time to share their knowledge. Thank you to our international speaker, Judge Abbe Fletman, a Judge in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and Team Leader of the Complex Litigation centre in the Civil Division. Our first event for 2023 will be our launch event on 9 February 2023 at the at the Union University & Schools Club Sydney beginning at 5.30pm. We will announce further details on our social media accounts when tickets can be purchased and an e-news will follow. Our program for 2023 will include our biennial NSW Women Lawyers Achievement Awards. Our office will be closed from 21 December 2022 and returning on 16 January 2023. The Executive Committee will then meet in the new year for a Strategic Planning meeting focused on exploring ways to continue to bring value to you as the voice of women and the legal community in the NSW. As always, please do not hesitate to get involved with us and any of our sub-committees; a social media post will be launched when those sub-committees are open. Please follow us on our social media pages for updates on our events and other matters: LinkedIn: Women Lawyers Association of NSW, Instagram (@WLANSW), Facebook: Women Lawyers of NSW and Twitter (@WLANSW). We are looking forward to a busy year of events and policy work and look forward to having you on board. Finally, a thank you to our members. Thank you for your continued engagement and support of the Association in 2022. We wish you a relaxing break and we very much look forward to opening the year with you in 2023!
