Pope Francis: True Love Never Stifles but Leaves Us Free to Love

By Devin Watkins
Vatican News, May 29, 2022

Though traditionally celebrated on Thursday, many nations mark the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ on the Sunday before Pentecost, including in Italy.

On Ascension Sunday, Pope Francis prayed the Eastertide Marian prayer of the Regina Coeli, and reflected on the day’s Gospel (Lk 24:46-53).

He noted that Jesus, in His final apparition to the disciples, did two things before ascending to God the Father: “He announces the gift of the Spirit, and then He blesses the disciples.” Read more...

Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego John Dolan ordained Maui man Dario Rinaldi to the priesthood for the Diocese of Honolulu May 20 at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in a solemn liturgy during which nearly 50 priests welcomed him into their brotherhood.

Bishop Dolan was a last-minute substitute for Bishop Larry Silva who tested positive for COVID-19 two days before and was in isolation at his residence at St. Stephen Diocesan Center, watching the ordination by livestream.

“It is my absolute joy to celebrate with you on this beautiful day on this great occasion as we celebrate the ordination of a fine man, one of your own,” the San Diego bishop said in his opening remarks.”

“I am not one of your own,” he said, drawing a laugh. “We know that Bishop Silva is down for the count for a few days, and so in an act of desperation he asked me to fill in.” Read more...

Mentoring New Leaders for Social Ministry, Part Two

(Jantanee Runpranomkorn/Shutterstock.com)

From the Office for Social Ministry

Retired social worker and former Diocese Office for Social Ministry Director Carol Ignacio once aptly stated that “there are no Lone Rangers in ministry...He even had Tonto.” The Old Western TV hero known as the Lone Ranger successfully met his mission by sharing leadership with his trusted scout – Tonto. In a similar way, our diocesan pastoral plan Stewards of the Gospel recognizes the different talents and skills each of us can bring to our church community. The plan lists LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT as one of its main priorities to meet our Churchʻs social mission of helping those in need. The plan also reminds us that “God bestows special gifts of leadership on certain members of our community, and we commit ourselves to the discernment and development of these leadership gifts so that the work of being stewards of the Gospel can continue for generations to come.”

As part of our efforts to nurture and resource ministry leaders who “take the gospel out to the ‘highways and byways’ of the world,” the Office for Social Ministry hopes to advance leadership development with our lay leaders by discerning strategies outlined in William E. Simon’s GREAT CATHOLIC PARISHES. So what makes a Catholic parish great? The first characteristic is SHARED LEADERSHIP - a parish’s ability to distribute leadership beyond the few who are already busy doing majority of the work. Read more...

Sexual Risk Avoidance Education Parent Information Night, Jun 1

Parent Information Nights on June 1

Sexual Risk Avoidance Education (SRAE)
Let us uphold the profound dignity of the body, especially the body of our keiki! Our design speaks “gift” but the world tells us to exploit the utility of the body.

If you desire your children to receive a sexual education that aligns with the original design of the Creator and St. John Paul II’s “Theology of the Body” then we invite their participation in SRAE where we will: proclaim the truth of masculinity, the beauty hidden in femininity, and the goodness of reserving the sexual union within marriage.

Parent information sessions include ways to be intentional with your children, dialogue with them to set boundaries and protect their sexual integrity.

Saint of the Week

Saint Justin Martyr
c.100 – c.165
Memorial - June 1

Today’s saint was a philosopher in the Greek tradition, born around 100 A.D. in Samaria to Greek parents. Saint Justin wrapped himself in the white, toga-style cloak of a Greek philosopher even after his conversion. He is the most well-known apologist of the second century, the only true Christian thinker known between the time of Saint John the Evangelist and Origen in the first half of the third century. Justin mercilessly criticized the intellectual dead end of the ancient paganism in which he was raised, seeing it as not merely neutral but as an obstacle to discovering the truth. Read more...
