24 July 2024The 46th | Kamala clinches campaign, cash and cloutIn another stunning twist in the election campaign, President Joe Biden bowed out of the race, clearing the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to run against Republican nominee Donald Trump. In her first campaign speech in
Delaware, Harris touted her experience as a prosecutor going after “predators,” “fraudsters,” and “cheaters,” adding: “So hear me when I say, I know Donald Trump’s type.” The historic departure of President Biden – who finally caved to weeks of pressure from within his party – has shaken up the race, pitting Trump against a boundary-breaking younger woman of Black and Indian heritage. In the first 24 hours after Biden’s announcement, Harris reportedly raised US$81 million. While Harris can only officially win the nomination at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago on 19-22 August, she has already secured enough delegates to make her candidacy something of a fait accompli. Harris still faces an uphill battle, however. Her approval ratings have long been weak and she will
need to withstand a myriad of attacks from Republicans who blame her for the border crisis. Political watchers argue that Harris’ challenge will be to stop Trump from making inroads with minorities and to win over blue-collar voters in swing states.

Harris' war chestIn the first 24 hours after President Joe Biden’s departure from the presidential race, the Harris campaign raised a record US$81 million – reportedly the highest haul in any single day period in US history. The Harris campaign also stands to inherit US$91.5 million that was left in the coffers of the Biden campaign. According to campaign finance experts, Harris has a strong claim to the funds because she is registered on Biden’s campaign in its filings with the Federal Election Committee (FEC), whereas a different candidate would not be entitled to it. The Trump campaign has moved quickly to block the transfer of Biden’s war chest to Harris, lodging a complaint with the FEC that it violates campaign finance law.
