RYSE ANNOUNCEMENTS

DOM and RYSE Celebrates Women's History Month

As Women's History Month comes to a close, we would like to recognize the remarkable women right here in the Department of Medicine. In this video, you will hear from five of our colleagues—faculty, staff, and a trainee—who discuss the importance of having women mentors and also share advice for pursuing a career in medicine and healthcare. Click below or HERE to watch!

RYSE Virtual Visiting Scholars Updates

In 2020 when visiting clerkships were placed on hold, we pivoted toward a two-week virtual mini-clerkship. Instead of our visiting students joining one team in a hospital, we leveraged our virtual platform to expose our scholars to trainees, faculty, and staff at all of our participating sites. From this need, our RYSE Virtual Visiting Scholars program was born. This academic year, we were joined by seven RYSE Virtual Visiting Scholars and we are proud to announce that four of our scholars matched at Emory for IM.

  • Dominique Mosely, Vanderbilt School of Medicine
  • Alejandro Juglar, University of Texas Medical Branch
  • Anna Feliciano, Indiana University School of Medicine
  • Jacob Hicks, Morehouse School of Medicine

Additionally, we are proud to announce that our inaugural RYSE Virtual Visiting Scholars 2020–2021 cohort (pictured below, right) is graduating from residency!

  • David Dorcius, Hospital Medicine, Memorial Hospital – the safety net hospital in Savannah, Georgia
  • Chidi Enunwa, GI Fellowship at the University of Colorado – where former Emory Digestive Diseases Assistant Division Director Jennifer Christie is Division Director
  • Bisrat Woldemichael, Primary Care, Peach Tree Health – a FQHC in Sacramento, California

Mentee of Tracey Henry, MD, MPH, MS, selected as a winner of the ACP's 2024 National Abstract Competition

We are pleased to announce an abstract submitted by Oreoluwa E. Olakunlehas, 2024 MD candidate and a mentee of Tracey Henry, MD, MPH, MS, (General Internal Medicine) has been selected by the American College of Physicians, as one of the top 10 abstracts selected as a winner in the 2024 National Abstract Competitions. The abstract, “Medical Student Perceptions, Attitudes, and Beliefs about Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Racial Advocacy Education in a Medical School Curriculum” will be highlighted along with the other student competition winners during the Medical Student Abstract Luncheon on Saturday, April 20, in the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

Olakunlehas successfully matched in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital earlier this month and will begin her residency in Boston this July.

Kimberly Manning, MD, receives Spirit of Atlanta Award

2024 NAM Emerging Leaders Forum

Emory SOM Women's History Month

The Emory Alliance for Women in Medicine and Science (EAWiMS) is excited to celebrate Women’s History Month. Exceptional rising star female faculty and staff members here at Emory School of Medicine were interviewed in celebration and honor of Women’s History Month. We are proud to share that DOM faculty members, Caroline Collins, MD, (General Internal Medicine) and Marina Sorrentino, MD, (Cardiology) were included among the 2024 features.

Caroline Collins, MD

Are there unique contributions that being a woman allows you to bring to science or medicine?
My experiences as a woman have shaped certain attributes that are beneficial in my practice. One such attribute is empathy. My approach to patient care is deeply rooted in empathy, allowing me to understand and connect with patients on a personal level. This empathetic understanding helps me meet people where they are in their health journey, providing support and guidance tailored to their individual needs.

Marina Sorrentino, MD

What are you most passionate about in your field?
I have a neuroscience background and I am passionate about exploring mechanisms regulating neuroinflammation and brain edema formation, especially in cerebral vascular diseases. Academic medicine has also given me the opportunity to mentor students and help them to achieve their career goals and this is something I absolutely enjoy doing it.
