This year's theme, Matariki herenga waka, celebrates bringing people together – encouraging everyone, regardless of culture, background or origin, to share stories, learn from one another, and celebrate as one community. Across Tāmaki Makaurau, the Matariki Festival runs until 19 July, with more than 100 free and low-cost events on offer, including cultural performances, food, stargazing and whānau-friendly activities. It's a wonderful opportunity to come together and embrace the spirit of Matariki. 👉 Find out what's happening at the Matariki Festival Auckland defends Battle the Bombay'sAuckland's 1–5 Year squad has successfully defended the Battle of the Bombay's title after an action-packed Winter Quad at Tūī Park Bowling Club. Battling frosty conditions, strong opposition and some nail-biting finishes, the team edged out Waikato by a single rink point to retain the overall trophy. The day was packed with memorable performances, including Lilly Wesche's remarkable comeback Singles victory, while the women also reclaimed the Auckland vs Thames Valley shield for the first time since 2003. On the men's side, consistent performances across all disciplines proved the difference in one of the closest finishes in recent years, with just two points separating all four teams. A huge congratulations to every player along with the coaches, management and supporters who helped make the campaign a success. A special thank you also goes to Team Manager Robyn Fisher, who was recognised for her outstanding contribution to the squad as she steps down from the role. We wish Robyn all the very best and thank her for her dedication and commitment. 👉 Read the full match recap A day to celebrate our bowls communityMore than 210 guests from our bowls community gathered at Royal Oak Bowls on Sunday for the 2026 Bowls Auckland Annual Awards Luncheon, celebrating another memorable season both on and off the green.
