Resources for LGBTQIA+ community members *This piece was originally shared in the iDEIologies: June 2024 newsletter* As we celebrate Pride Month, we know that LBGTQIA+ people and their allies are committed to advancing equity and inclusion for the civil rights and safety of LGBTQIA+ communities. While many LGBTQIA+ people are openly out in their personal and professional lives many LGBTQIA+ people are not able to live their lives openly due to fear, lack of support, and lack of legal protections. As we recognize Pride this month, some inclusive actions you can take to celebrate and support our SOM LGBTQIA+ community are:
We invite you to visit the Emory University Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion calendar for additional information on recognitions. RYSE Virtual Visiting Mini-Clerkship Have you heard about the RYSE Virtual Visiting Mini-Clerkship? This two-week, non-graded virtual experience, for non-Emory medical students who intend to apply to and pursue a career in internal medicine (or an IM subspecialty) and exposes them to Emory's thriving academic medical center and careers in medicine. We encourage interested rising fourth-year medical students with an anticipated graduation of Spring 2025, especially those from groups underrepresented in medicine, including but not limited to underrepresented minorities and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, to apply for our RYSE Virtual Visiting Student Mini-Clerkship. The mini-clerkship will host two separate cohorts this fall. The deadline to apply is August 7, 2024. If you know someone who may be interested in this opportunity, or would like to share this opportunity with your networks, you may find the application and more information here. Health Justice Standards: 2024 Update The Health Justice Standards were initially written in the Summer of 2020 by Churchwell Diversity & Inclusion Collective (CDIC) members, a resident-led group that advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion at the resident level through professional development, networking, and community outreach programs. The original report focused on 17 standards in five major areas and was formally developed by Emory's J. Willis Hurst internal medicine(IM) residents, residency program leadership, and Department of Medicine(DOM) leadership in the spring of 2021.The standards frame how the residency program and the DOM aim to build a more equitable healthcare system and training environment. This 2024 update represents the first review of those initial Health Justice Standards and details the progress made thus far. It was again written collaboratively by residents, faculty, and program leadership. The update highlights areas of success and areas of ongoing work and is intended to serve as a living document that is consistently updated, as we work to honor and improve the aims of the original health justice standard commitment. You can view the 2024 update, the original HJS report, and learn about the CDIC by clicking below. Share Your Voice for Healing and Growing As a part of the School of Medicine's strategic plan to design and implement an anti-racism educational curriculum, the Actionable Education Initiative (AEI) subcommittee on anti-racism is asking the SOM community to share a story or experience influenced by difference. Submissions can include stories of microaggressions, discrimination, harm, threat of harm, processing, healing, or allyship. The de-identified stories will inform educational interventions and policies to help eradicate bias and injustice within our institution. Please note, that if you do not wish to officially report any harm at this time, please keep your submissions free of identifying information, as our team members are mandatory reporters. We hold the utmost respect for your discretion and do not discourage you from reporting someone who has committed harm to you. Additionally, Emory University's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offer a variety of programs, services, and resources to promote emotional, behavioral, collegiate, and workplace health. Call for Nominations - DEIRA Thread Director The School of Medicine is soliciting nominations for a faculty member to direct the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Racial Advocacy (DEIRA) thread for the MD program. The primary goal for this thread is to ensure that the MD curriculum reflects the School of Medicine’s mission for equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism. The thread director will be responsible for developing and maintaining a robust curriculum that will prepare medical students to work toward diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial advocacy in the profession and in patient care. This thread will necessitate collaboration with course, clerkship, and other thread directors, School of Medicine diversity, equity, and inclusion leaders, and the Executive Curriculum Committee. The successful candidate will exhibit profound knowledge of theory and practice in promoting all manners of diversity, will employ sound pedagogical principles, and will collaborate effectively with all relevant parties.
