Auckland doubles down at Molecheck 7s Finals

More than 500 players from 61 teams lit up greens across 14 clubs in this year’s record-setting Molecheck Interclub Series, with the finals day delivering plenty of drama at Howick Bowling Club.

In the Pathway 7’s, both Auckland sides rose to the occasion. The women claimed their first title, overcoming a strong challenge from Carlton Cornwall. Key wins in the pairs and fours sealed the historic victory.

The men’s final was just as gripping. Stephen Campbell put Howick ahead in the singles against Jamie Hill, but Auckland struck back in the pairs before the fours, skipped by Adam Haywood, powered home to secure an incredible fourth consecutive title.

Meanwhile, the Auckland Cup went to Howick’s White Sharks, who capped a dominant campaign with a finals win over Pringle Park.

Adding to the day’s atmosphere, event partner Molecheck ran two competitions and donated spot prizes, won by Ted Walker (Carlton Cornwall)  and Nathan Haturini (Mt Albert BC).

Next gen bowlers set to star at Mt Eden

The St George National Under 26 Pairs returns next weekend with strong momentum, from its inaugural year. 36 players from across the North Island will gather at Mt Eden Bowls Club for two days of high-quality competition.

Defending champs Hannah Dawson and Henrietta Scott return to defend the title they claimed in 2025. Among those looking to challenge are New Zealand Blackjack squad members Briar Atkinson and Camron Horo, who arrive in outstanding form after winning the Mixed Pairs at the World Bowls Junior Indoor Championship in Ireland last December.

Teams from Auckland, Far North, North Harbour, Wellington, Taranaki and Counties Manukau will compete, highlighting the growing national interest in the event.

Play begins Saturday with four qualifying rounds to determine the top eight teams, who progress to Sunday’s knockout championship draw. Remaining teams will contest a plate competition.

The event also honours the legacy of St George Bowls, with proceeds supporting youth bowls initiatives through Bowls Auckland.

Finals will be broadcast live on Sky Sport and Bowls Auckland’s YouTube channel from 11am Sunday.

Say hello to Daniel Chivers, the new Club Manager at Balmoral Bowling Club.

Daniel is relatively new to bowls, having first taken up the game in late 2024 at Orewa Bowling Club. It didn’t take long for the sport to hook him, and now he’s taken the next step by working within the game he’s quickly grown to love.

Originally born in South Africa, Daniel moved to New Zealand at the age of 10 and has lived on the North Shore ever since. He attended Westlake Boys High School before going on to study at the University of Auckland.

Daniel is excited about the opportunity at Balmoral and the potential the club holds, particularly with its central location and excellent facilities. He’s also looking forward to working closely with Bowls Auckland and getting to know more people across the wider bowls community.

If you’re visiting Balmoral Bowling Club soon, be sure to say hello and give Daniel a warm welcome.

Maraetai members sharpen skills with Selina Goddard

By Glen Fitzgerald

Bowls Maraetai is making bold moves in its quest to become one of the region’s leading socially competitive clubs, and we’re bringing in top expertise to help make it happen.

Thanks to club member Ross Peden, members recently took part in a series of coaching sessions with Blackjack representative and high-performance coach Selina Goddard. Across four half-day sessions, 20 club members worked through a wide range of practical and strategic topics designed to lift their game.

The sessions covered everything from training plans, drills, and team roles to shot selection, tactical awareness, and handling pressure in match play. Players also spent time on the green working through scenario-based drills and adapting to changing rink speeds and conditions.

The impact has already been noticeable, with member competitiveness on the rise. A new fast artificial surface, growing coaching opportunities, and regular socially competitive play, like Twilight Bowls on Wednesday and Friday evenings are all helping drive momentum.

As a thank-you, the club presented Goddard with a personalised Bowls Maraetai playing shirt, which she praised for its modern design and the strong sense of unity it represents.

With members increasingly appearing in centre events, Bowls Maraetai is clearly a club on the rise. Iron sharpens iron, and Maraetai is sharpening fast.

Auckland BC Champ of Champ Singles

By Paul Neazor

The time is drawing nearer for the Auckland Bowling Club Junior Champ of Champ Singles for 2026, and already interest is building across a much wider section of the bowling community than just Auckland. The 2025 field included players from 15 centres, and nine were represented in the last 16. Something like that is anticipated again this year.

Players travelled from far and wide, with Gillian Harper from Houhora, a little town 40km north of Kaitaia, having the longest northwards drive home afterwards and Barbie Paul from Hampstead, an Ashburton suburb, had the longest southwards return journey.

The 2026 tournament will held it on King’s Birthday weekend, Saturday 30 May and Sunday 31 May. The format is section play on Saturday and, if necessary, one knockout round that day so we have 16 players left battling it out at Auckland BC on Sunday. Every player will have a minimum of three games.
