Recognizing World Kidney Day at the Last Thursday, March 14 the Department of Medicine and the Division of Renal Medicine celebrated World Kidney Day! March 14 was also the inaugural ATLANTIS Symposium held in person at the School of Medicine. The ATLANTIS Symposium served as a central platform for researchers, providing a dedicated opportunity to share ideas, showcase innovative techniques, and contribute to the advancement of kidney, urology, and hematology research. With a focus on networking, collaboration, and career development, the symposium featured recently retired Renal Division Director, Chief Medical Officer, NephroDI Therapeutics, and Juha P. Kokko Professor Emeritus of Medicine, Jeff M. Sands, MD, as keynote speaker. Dr. Sand's keynote is titled "Developing a Therapy for Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus." In addition, other talks by faculty, postdocs, and even undergrads presented findings from their various kidney, urology, and hematology research. This all-day event provided networking opportunities, updates, awards presentations, and a collegial environment to strengthen existing partnerships, forge new collaborations, share best practices, and cultivate innovative ideas for new research. Thank you to all who attended and who organized this successful first ATLANTIS Symposium. Emory's 2036 campaign speaks with Jada Bussey-Jones, MD Jada Bussey-Jones, MD (General Internal Medicine) was recently featured on the 2O36 campaign's The Platform as Emory celebrates diversity and Women's History Month. In this interview, Dr. Bussey-Jones discusses the importance of diversity in medicine to address health disparities. When her grandparents passed away from preventable conditions, she was motivated to become a physician. As a Black woman, she struggled to find her place in academic medicine until she found a mentor. Now she’s creating pathways for students and physicians and ensuring a diverse workforce that better represents the real world. The 2O36 campaign is a fundraising campaign across Emory that aims to inspire financial investment for the benefit of Emory University and to bring the Emory community together to build on our mission to serve humanity through knowledge. Grants Aim to Improve Cardiac Emergency Preparedness in Georgia “Everyone should learn CPR, because you never know when you might need it,” said Dr. Jonathan Kim, Director of Sports Cardiology at Emory Healthcare and an Associate Professor at Emory School of Medicine. “Cardiac arrest can happen to athletes, young and old, with or without warning. What we know beyond a shadow of a doubt is that acting as quickly as possible during a crisis – and having an emergency action plan ahead of time with a focus on early CPR and defibrillation if necessary – can save lives.” A $250,000 grant from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation was awarded to Emory University to support the launch of the CPR Emergency Preparedness program, which will provide instructor-led training with hands-on, interactive educational sessions for participants. The American Heart Association will provide CPR instruction for the program, and sports medicine professionals from Emory Healthcare, one of the nation’s largest employers of athletic trainers, will lead training with youth sports officials and coaches to improve safety at the youth sports level.
