Celebrate International Day of People with Disability with Carers QueenslandThis year, celebrate International Day of People with Disability with Carers Queensland! IDPwD is a time to celebrate inclusion and access in our society and reflect on how much we still have to do. It is a reminder that every day we want to see, hear and learn from people with disability from all walks of life; recognise their achievements and
contribution to their community, and commit to building a world where everyone can live and fully participate in the life they choose. Carers Queensland’s International Day of People with Disability campaign celebrates innovators, creators and storytellers with disability, sharing their take on accessibility and inclusion – their dreams, their observations, experiences, and their challenge to society to make change. This year our campaign theme Celebrating Inclusion. Creating Opportunities. highlights the change already taking shape, in our communities and in the lives of individuals,
to open up more experiences, opportunities and choices. It is also a call for communities, businesses, and industries to work with and learn from people with disability to understand what better access and inclusion looks like to them. Get involved in our Carers Queensland International Day of People with Disability campaign and download resources and find out more about our regional IDPwD events.
Disability Action Week
Workforce diversity – open up to opportunity Disability Action Week, from 26 November to 2 December, acknowledges the important and varied contributions people living with a disability make to our state, while also empowering people with disability, raising awareness of disability issues, and improving access and inclusion throughout the wider community.
This year’s theme, Workforce diversity – open up to opportunity focuses on employment opportunities for people with disability and benefits of an inclusive workforce.
For Brad, he credits his support workers funded by the NDIS with helping him to regain his dignity and free up his time and energy to pursue business and social interests. He is now able to attend Chamber of Commerce meetings and functions at night, as well as tutor and mentor people through the University of Third Age. “Until I had NDIS support, it was literally 100 per cent impossible to go to social functions because I needed someone with me to help me use the bathroom. Now I have a companion that attends events with me. Humanity came back to me.” NDIS participant Ky is using his dedicated NDIS-funded support team to work on his entrepreneurial journey as a community musician where he will mentor other creatives and musicians with disability. Ky’s mum, Tahlia, said: “Because of Ky’s autism and intellectual disability, he doesn't communicate stereotypically, so music is how he communicates and relates to the world.”
Podcast: MC Wheels is telling stories through his musicMC Wheels is a Sunshine Coast-based hip hop artist known offstage as Nathan Tessman.
Nathan uses a wheelchair, and for the last few years has lived independently with support from the NDIS.
He has also been honing his craft, releasing new music and performing at gigs around the southeast corner, including opening for Bliss n Eso at the Brisbane Riverstage.

Gold Coast local Evan is one participant benefiting from the BYOB program, as he develops the skills to successfully start his own public speaking business. “I want to try and educate people as a whole and show them that having a disability doesn’t stop a person from having goals.”
