Reflections on the Dobbs Decision of the Supreme Court of the United States, overturning Roe vs. Wade
|
 |
| |
By Most Reverend Larry Silva, Bishop of Honolulu
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Although the decision of the Supreme Court to overturn Roe vs. Wade would have been welcome any day, it is significant that it occurred on this day on which we honor the ardent love of Jesus for all his people. For fifty years, we have been living with a legal decision based on a manufactured right that was never in the United States Constitution, and we thank God that the truth that the Constitution grants no such right has finally been affirmed. An Australian bishop recently remarked that for a country to admit it had made a wrong decision was largely the result of many people – especially the Catholic Church – insisting persistently on the truth that abortion takes the life of an innocent human being and is never justified. It was the Body of Christ, nourished by the Sacred Heart, that kept this message alive
even when it seemed to be completely dead. I thank God for all the women and men who worked so hard and so patiently these past fifty years to bring the matter to the legal resolution announced today. I am particularly grateful to all the people in our own diocese and state who have never given up hope that this day would come. I invite all to praise God for bringing this landmark decision to fruition! Read more...

Historic Cemetery Needs Friends

By Anna Weaver
Hawaii Catholic Herald
After ongoing issues with trespassers including a recent fire, the Diocese of Honolulu is looking for solutions to allow its historic Catholic cemetery in downtown Honolulu to remain open for visitors.
King Street Cemetery is the resting place for many of Hawaii’s early Catholics including its first four bishops and many Sacred Hearts priests, brothers and sisters who helped establish and spread the faith in the islands in the latter half of the 19th and early 20th century.
“This is a link to our history,” said Deacon Keith Cabiles, the Diocese of Honolulu’s chancellor and archivist.
“If anybody just walks through there, it’s such a beautiful place. I spent an hour on Memorial Day weekend just taking photos and that wasn’t even a fourth of the whole cemetery.” Read more...

Get Informed About Child Vaccinations
|

From the Office for Social Ministry
For parents who have been waiting to vaccinate their keiki under 5 years old against COVID-19, this summer is the time to do it! As of June 18, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have endorsed the recommendation to make COVID-19 vaccines available for children as young as 6 months old. Free vaccines are now available across the U.S. and in Hawaii, regardless of immigration or health insurance status. The vaccine doses are adjusted based on the age of the recipient:
-
Moderna doses for age 6-months through age 5 are ¼ of the adult dose.
-
Pfizer doses for age 6-months through age 4 are 1/10 of the adult dose.
While adults are more prone to contracting the virus, children can also be infected, get sick and spread COVID-19 to others. Unlike elders and adults with compromised immunity, 1 in 3 children younger than 18 years old who were hospitalized with COVID had no underlying conditions. Read more...

Saint of the Week
Saint Junipero Serra
1713 – 1784
Memorial - July 1
The United States of America’s impressive Capitol building in Washington, D.C., includes the majestic, semicircular Statuary Hall. Each of the fifty states chooses two citizens of historic importance to represent it in the Hall. Statues of one nun and four Catholic priests, two of them saints, grace Statuary Hall, including today’s saint. Junipero Serra was the founder of California. He was the pathbreaking, indestructible priest who trekked California’s mountains, valleys, deserts, and shores to found nine of its eventual twenty-one missions. California’s rugged cattle culture, its luxurious orchards and rolling vineyards, its distinctive Mission architecture, and its blending of Mexican and Native American heritage are the legacy of Fr. Serra and his Franciscan confreres. Read more...
