We'll be in touch through Tiritiri with news and staff stories from around Corrections, plus insights into our career pathways and recruitment tips. We hope it is useful in helping you to explore different career options and find out more about our work! In this issue, we’re sharing Jeremy’s story. Jeremy had a bit of an unusual upbringing – he grew up on prison grounds, as his father was a prison officer working at Waikeria Prison back when staff lived on site. He reflects on his time at Waikeria Prison, both growing up and in the present day working in Te Ao Marama (Māori Focus Unit). We also talk to a Service Manager and a District Manager about what makes a fantastic probation officer, plus share reflections from people in prison on the film A Boy Called Piano – a moving documentary about Fa’amoana John Luafutu’s rehabilitation journey. Senior Corrections Officer Jeremy was just ten-years old when his family moved to what was then known as Waikeria Village after his dad found work there in the 1970s. Sitting within the confines of the prison, the village was where Prison Officer’s families were housed.
