The 3MT is a fantastic event to showcase your research, and hone your communication skills. I really enjoy the 3MT event as a chance to see a snapshot of the research undertaken by our HDR students and future research leaders. If you missed the information session held on 31 May, you can view the recording here. This session provided an overview of the competition and requirements to participate. and also features last year’s University of Adelaide winner, PhD candidate Trang Nguyen talking about her experience. It takes less than 5 minutes to register, and registrations must be received by 17th June 2022 but video submissions are not due until 15 July. Best, Katy Dolman Three Minute Thesis The 3 Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a national competition that challenges Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students to effectively explain their research to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes. The aim is to cultivate their academic, presentation, and research communication skills while celebrating the exciting research conducted by HDR students across the country. Entry is now open to all HDRs, however, only PhD candidates who have successfully passed their Major Review by the date of their first presentation are eligible to reach the University Final round. Preparing for the 3MT: Everything you need to know When: 15 June 2022, 10:30am - 1:00pm Designed for any HDR student who is thinking about participating in the 3MT® competition, this workshop explains what the 3MT is, how it works, and provides strategies and suggestions to help you win over the judging panel. Do you want to know how to make your presentation memorable, and cope with the inevitable anxiety that comes with presenting? In this session, Hugh Kearns will share all the best ‘tips and tricks’ to be successful in the 3MT. Register here. Please note: all HDR students are welcome to attend this session - you do not need to have registered as a 3MT competitor. Though delivered online, this is a workshop, not a lecture, and breakout rooms will be used so that students can interact with each other. Please ensure audio and video is configured so you can participate. We recommend using a laptop or desktop computer, not a phone for this to work well. Reviving your Life while Doing an HDR When: 22 June 2022, 10:00am - 12:00pm In this final session of the Mental Health and Wellbeing series, Jane Turner Goldsmith will provide the tools needed to pick yourself up or ‘revive’ when facing common concerns for HDRs, including anxiety and stress. This session will include a range of experiential exercises to relax the body, including breathing, meditation, mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation and visualisation. Register here. Stand Up, Speak Up and Persuade When: 23 June 2022, 10:00am - 11:00am How is it that two people can talk about the same thing, but only one gets their message across? That’s because it’s all in the delivery. If your job is to persuade and influence others, these techniques will help you to build on your presentation skills and excel. Attend this workshop presented by Sharon Ferrier from Persuasive Presentations to learn how to stand up, speak up and persuade! Register here. Research Grants and Fellowships for Postgraduate Students- Grant Writing Basics When: 27 June 2022, 2:00pm - 4:00pm Presented by Research Services, this lecture will provide an overview on writing research grants and fellowships. The session will cover topics including the grant lifecycle, staying informed about funding opportunities, grantsmanship, building a track record, and planning and writing winning proposals. NewsAcademic Integrity Training Academic Integrity is important for everyone in the University. To support teaching staff in upholding the University’s expectations around Academic Integrity, an online self-paced module covers topics for teaching staff such as promoting a culture of academic integrity and assessment design for integrity. This course has also been made available to HDR students, and can be recognised for CaRST credit. If you are currently teaching, or plan to incorporate teaching in your future career, the Academic Integrity course for staff is recommended. Call for new members - Alliance of Gender Scholars The Fay Gale Centre for Research on Gender invites HDR candidates and EMCRs across the University of Adelaide interested in gender-related research to join the Alliance of Gender Scholars. The Alliance aims to create a community of gender scholars across different research groups and faculties. We do a range of activities, including, development of feminist theories, writing, publication and presentation strategies (which can be claimed as CaRST hours).
