"We aspire to make ZELLCHEMING even better every year. Our new initiatives serve to push the number and quality of members and the content formats further forward." Kind regards, Prof. Dr. Helga Zollner-Croll Honoring Dr. Marietta Jass-Teichmann with the Eugen-Lendholt-MedalOn June 21, 2023, Dr. Marietta Jass-Teichmann was honored with the Eugen-Lendholt-Medal at the 117th Annual General Meeting of the ZELLCHEMING Association. After studying business administration, Dr. Marietta Jass-Teichmann also completed a supplementary course in paper manufacturing. After completing her doctorate, she joined her parents' company and was in charge of the technical department. She was largely responsible for the investment of a 480,000 t/y paper machine in Schwarza at the beginning of 2000. Dr. Jass-Teichmann initiated both forward and backward integration of the company. The Jass company purchased Thüringen Recycling, now Jass-Fiber, and now operates two processing plants in Poland (Jass-Board). Environmental protection and sustainability have a high priority in her decisions. In addition to her corporate responsibility, Dr. Jass-Teichmann is active in various association committees and is very involved in the local social sector. By awarding the Eugen-Lendholt-Medal, the ZELLCHEMING Association would like to honor the outstanding technical and entrepreneurial achievements of the Managing Partner of Papierfabrik Adolf Jass GmbH & Co. KG, Dr. Marietta Jass-Teichmann. We are happy to welcome new members again this month! We welcome to the ZELLCHEMING association:

This is how the members of the "Allianz pro Brückenstrompreis" assess the results of the closed meeting in Meseberg. The alliance members called on the federal government to quickly adopt a temporary reduced electricity price for specific industry branches, because investment decisions were either imminent or had not been made. The stakes are high: competitiveness could be lost, the green transformation is at risk and employees fear for their jobs. The entire industrial value chain in Europe is at risk of sustained damage. Without a reduced electricity price from January 1, 2024, jobs and entire sites continue to be threatened. The alliance announced that it would continue to join forces and increase pressure on the German government. Winfried Schaur, President of the association "Die Papierindustrie": "The German government has missed an important opportunity to give German industry a growth perspective and planning security for investments. The important industry electricity price was not decided, the extension of the peak compensation was postponed. The Growth Opportunities Act that was passed will not be enough to provide the necessary transformation impetus." The "Allianz pro Brückenstrompreis" is an alliance of associations and industrial unions from German energy-intensive industries. Together they represent 1.1 million employees in 8,000 energy-intensive companies in Germany. From the membershipVoith and Essity work on an innovative concept for CO2-neutral paper productionAt the end of April, ZELLCHEMING company member Voith unveiled a completely new, disruptive concept for paper production in collaboration with hygiene and healthcare company Essity. This concept enables CO2-neutral paper production as well as fresh water savings of up to 95% and energy savings of up to 40%. Voith and Essity are currently working on a pilot plant in Heidenheim. In addition to the disruptive concept, Voith is also working on other promising solutions in its research and development department. In total, the leading full-line supplier invests around 100 million euros annually in the development of more efficient and sustainable solutions to drive decarbonization in paper production. An important field of action for decarbonization is the drying of paper, as this is where the greatest energy consumption occurs. The drying cylinders are typically heated with steam, which is often generated by burning fossil fuels. In order to be able to dispense with the use of fossil fuels, Voith is working intensively on concepts for the electrification of paper drying. In the process, various technologies are evaluated to determine their potential and identify suitable solutions depending on the energy source at the site. This leads to significant reductions in CO2 emissions at the paper mills. In addition to electrification, heat pumps for heat recovery are included in the development approaches to further improve the sustainability balance. Digital solutions, intelligent control systems, and innovations in the area of clothing and roll shells offer additional efficiency benefits. ![]() Voith is also a member of various industry initiatives to drive forward the decarbonization of paper production. One such initiative is the Model Factory Paper, in which companies along the value chain work with research institutes and higher education institutions on pre-competitive basic research. As Vice President New Business and Research at Voith Paper and Vice Chair of the Model Factory Paper Shareholders' Committee, Dr. Lada Bemert can confirm the positive influence of the initiative: "With the help of completely closed systems, no more unused energy should escape from the process in the future," says Bemert. "Building on our research results, our aim is to make the technologies available to industry as quickly as possible. In doing so, we are setting an important course for the future." From the technical committeesMeetings of technical committees at ZELLCHEMING-ExpoOn the occasion of the ZELLCHEMING Expo, the Technical Committee Coating of Paper and Board (COAT) held a hybrid meeting on June 21, 2023. Three main topics are currently being worked on:
Guests are welcome to the technical committee, interested parties please contact the chairman, Dr. Knut Hornig. The next meeting is scheduled for November 2023.
The Technical Committee Chemical Additives (CHAD) met on June 22, 2023 at the RheinMain CongressCenter (RMCC) in Wiesbaden to exchange ideas on the future direction of the Technical Committee. The next meeting will be held in Darmstadt from October 19-20, 2023, and guests are also welcome.
