As we write this week's Student News, Clubsland and Market Day are in full swing up on level 4 of Hub Central!

We're getting right back into the thick of things now - if you're having any trouble with your studies then it's worth getting support early from any of the academic support that's available. This includes the Maths Learning Centre, Writing Centre, Peer-Assisted Study Sessions and study tips from Student Health and Wellbeing.

Check out what's below (paid opportunities, Sustainability Week, Safer Campus Community and more), and be sure to keep yourself nice and warm and dry this week.

News & opportunities

Has maths turned up in your courses?

Whenever maths appears in one of your courses, you're welcome to visit the Maths Learning Centre to talk about it. Drop in between 10am and 4pm on weekdays (Adelaide time), and a tutor will come to you. We’ll talk with you about your maths and help you become more confident.

 

Counselling Support
Did you know Student Life Counselling Support provide free, confidential, short term professional counselling for all current students? You don't need a mental health care plan and you can speak to the team about any issue that might be bothering you! Learn more and register on the Counselling website.

 

Photographers, we need you!
Got some mad photography skills? Want to be paid for doing what you love? Ecoversity is looking for 1-2 student photographers to capture images of students & staff events across Sustainability Week (August 22-26). If this sounds like you, get in touch by emailing ecoversity@adelaide.edu.au

Do you have a disability or ongoing medical condition? Learn about the latest scholarship, internships, career events and research/projects with Disability Support's Latest News.

Are you a postgraduate student needing financial assistance?
If you are commencing the last semester of Honours or Postgraduate Coursework program in 2022 and need of financial assistance, you may be eligible for the A.R. Riddle grant. Contact Student Care (call 8313 5430 or email studentcare@adelaide.edu.au) to make an appointment and discuss your eligibility - applications close 17 August.

 

Open Day is this weekend!
Our beautiful North Terrace campus will be on display this Sunday (14 August) for Open Day. While we prepare, please be aware there will be increased traffic around the Maths Lawns, Barr Smith Lawns and in Hub Central.

Need support with your tax return?
Tax Help is a free service to students to assist with tax return preparation. If you earn less than $60,000 per year and don't have an ABN, contact Student Care 8313 5430 for an appointment.

Have a medical condition or disability?
You may be eligible for Alternative Exam Arrangements (AEA) - to apply for this, you’ll need to register with Disability Support and provide supporting medical documentation. The last date do this for semester 2 is 12 September. For more information, check the Disability Support website, call them on 8313 5962 or email disability@adelaide.edu.au.

 

Safer Campus Community

Safer Campus Community Week

8 - 12 August
Did you know the University of Adelaide provides resources, training, support and advocacy to assist students to recognise inappropriate behaviour, take bystander action, know their rights, and understand their reporting options. Safer Campus Community Week provides a timely reminder to familiarise yourself with the resources and services available to you.

 
 

Yes Means Yes! Consent Matters
As part of the University's commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment, all new students are automatically enrolled in Yes Means Yes! (Consent Matters). In this self-guided educational module, students will learn about sexual consent through animation, articles, interactive activities and scenarios. More information and to enroll here.

 

Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Information Network (SASHIN)
SASHIN members are trained staff who are committed to ensuring the University is a safe and respectful environment. Students can contact SASHIN members who will listen without judgement, can refer students to relevant support services, provide information about reporting processes & respect the student’s right to make their own decisions.

Free Bystander training for students
This education and intervention program facilitated by Specialist Sexual Violence Response Counsellor, teaches us to be leaders in the prevention of sexual violence and harassment. The program aims to teach students how to recognise sexual violence in its various forms and have the confidence to speak out and offer help.

Sustainability Week 2022

22 - 26 August
Various locations
With over 20 events across three campuses, University students, clubs, staff, and special guests will bring you a range of activities from panels, Q&As, workshops, cooking class, film screenings and bicycle maintenance. More information available at the Ecoversity website on events and ticketing.

 
 

Volunteer connect
Join YouX at Volunteer Connect to meet and mingle with a range of volunteer organisations and not-for-profits. Organisations will be delivering TED-style talks about their cause, volunteer roles and other opportunities within their organisations. If that’s not enough, there’ll also be free food, free coffee and door prizes.

Workshop: Adapting to the Australian Learning Environment
2pm, 11 August - Ira Raymond Room
If you're new to studying at University in Australia, this workshop will give you a head start to succeed in your studies. Topics covered include: Australian academic language, expectations in class, social conventions, avoiding plagiarism, and how to successfully communicate with your classmates and lecturers. Refreshments provided.

Food Truck Feast
Join YouX for a massive line-up of local food trucks, vintage clothing op shop bus, bar, stage entertainment, marshmallow toasting stations, games corner, and free food galore! Food Truck Feast is the biggest food event to hit the Barr Smith Lawns this year.

Panel discussion - War on Healthcare Waste
12pm to 1pm, 24 and 25 August - various locations
Come join us during Sustainability week for our panel discussion! Listen as great speakers talk about their experiences in healthcare, and the initiatives that have been started across South Australia to reduce waste. We also have booths with lovely volunteers to talk about our upcoming hackathon event. Find out more about the events in AHMS and North Terrace.

Career Services and Student Employment support are free for all students.

  • For casual work while you study check out the Student Employment site from the AUU.
  • Gain internships and work experience by searching CareerHub
  • Find Graduate Jobs (apply before you graduate) with Career Services
  • Search for work at the University

The Careers team also run employer events and workshops to increase your employability, build your resume and LinkedIn profile, improve interview skills, grow your career and more.
