Karinya News - August 2025

Dear Friends of Karinya

An August hello to you, as we find ourselves almost at the end of an intriguing winter! Just like the weather, at Karinya, we have really not been at all certain what each day would bring over these recent weeks.

What has been a constant since our last missive has been the support of our Friends.  Our last newsletter was early in June and since then the chills of winter have been matched by the warmth of our Friends in so many ways.

Since the beginning of the new financial year, the Karinya Team has worked with 45 unique women, continuing with some women on their forward journeys beyond Karinya, or just starting out alongside women as they embark on new directions in their lives.

We are also on the lookout for someone to join the Karinya Care Team as a Casework Navigator. The Casework Navigator provides support to the Karinya House Caseworkers to ensure seamless care throughout a woman’s journey with Karinya House. The Navigator collaborates with Caseworkers, to provide wraparound support including ensuring consistency in administrative and data management, and practical assistance to women. If you are interested in this role, or know someone who might be, more information is available on our website, here.

Please note: references to events or appeals below are for the information of all our Friends. If you are a financial Friend of Karinya House, be assured we value the current extent of your financial support, and no additional support from current donors is being sought through the sharing of this news, other than asking you to consider sharing this eNews with friends or family if it may be of interest to them.

Are you Walking for Hope?

Inspired by the wonderful Mercy Walk for Women, held rurally from Boorowa for over 10 years, in support of Karinya House, the mantle has now been taken up by the Karinya team. We have been further inspired by the exuberant support received following the launch of the Canberra based, 2025 Walk for Hope.

The incredibly significant support of Major Partner. Doma Group | Hotels ensures the event is on a secure foundation in its new locale.

The Canberra Southern Cross Club, who have previously hosted the annual Karinya House Gala Dinner, are now hosting the Walk for Hope, which will start from the grounds of the Canberra Southern Cross Club - Yacht Club.

We have 20 Champions (Individuals and Teams) for the 2025 Walk for Hope, each pledging to raise at least $5,000. Currently, there are over 100 members of the community registered for the walk on 14 September 2025.  We would love to get beyond 200 registered participants. This invitation extends to schools and other community groups also.

Each registered participant will hopefully also be supported by family and friends to raise funds to support the women we are privileged to walk alongside.

The Walk for Hope is inclusive, family-friendly and open to everyone.

Register or support the Walk for Hope here 🧡

Speaking of the Canberra Southern Cross Club

Are you a member of the Canberra Southern Cross Club.

If you are, you might consider linking your Membership Card to Karinya House as your charity partner, as part of their Community Rewards Program.

The Community Rewards Program is an innovative initiative of the Canberra Southern Cross Club that launched in 2015.  When you nominate a Community Group participating in the program and link it to your membership, we will calculate the equivalent of 7.5 cents for every dollar you spend on food and beverages at Woden, Tuggeranong, Jamison, Yacht Club and Snapper & Co. to be donated to that group.

For Karinya House, the annual financial donation that flows to Karinya through the CSCC Community Rewards Program is significant.  We thank the Canberra Southern Cross Club for their longstanding partnership with Karinya House, and we thank all Club members for your ongoing support.

In addition, with CSCC CEO Matt Walshe, stepping up as a Walk for Hope Champion, for all of August, the Club are donating $1 to Karinya House for every Chicken Schnitzel sold to Karinya House. 🙌🏽🧡

So, if you have your Membership Card handy, follow the link below and select Karinya House from the list of charities, and link Karinya House to your CSCC Membership Card. 😎

Alternatively (or as well as the above), slip down to your local Canberra Southern Cross Club venue, in August, and enjoy a chicken schnitzel - if that is your cup of tea!

Snippets....

This message came from a woman, who after residing at Karinya House, was assisted by two of the Care Team to move to her new allocated home interstate. This included transporting the woman and her baby to the home, accessing all necessary household goods, assisting with the set-up of her new home, and linking her with local services.

'"I just want to say a big thank you to everyone at Karinya who got me to this point and all the support that I had received from everyone has truly made a big difference in to how everything is at the moment. We are doing so good so far in the move all thanks to you.'

A recent text message received ..,

"Hello Karinya Team,🩷, I've received your wishes card, and I thank you all for being supportive and caring. Your words brightened my day. You helped me during my difficult time, and we are very grateful. ☺️ Thank you all💐"

Thank You!

Thank you to the many Friends of Karinya who continue to walk alongside with us during into this new financial year.

A shout out to the Gungahlin Bulls Rugby League Football Club, who supported Karinya House this year through their Ladies Day, held on a very chilly Saturday, 27th July.  Committee Member Claire attended the day to represent Karinya.  A huge thank you to all of the Gungahlin Bulls community, especially Molly Sturgiss for being such a wonderful connection throughout.

The support of the community in which we live provides a direct contribution to the lives of the women and children that we walk alongside. Anyone interested in joining our village of supporters can access more information by visiting our website at the link below.
