Latest news, research and events from the Melbourne Disability Institute at the University of Melbourne
At the end of May, the Australian Human Rights Commission published the Human Rights and Technology Report, which sets out a roadmap for responsible innovation. The report has a major focus on inclusion for people with disability and lists nearly 40 recommendations to ensure that new technologies are developed and used in ways that are inclusive, accountable, and with robust human rights safeguards.
The final report is the culmination of three years of consultation with the tech industry, governments, civil society and communities across Australia and included a national survey, face-to-face consultations with national and international experts, roundtables and formal submissions. The Australian Human Rights Commission is hosting a webinar series to discuss the project,
roadmap and the key recommendations. The upcoming session on 22 June will focus on the accessibility of goods, services and facilities that use digital communications technology for people with disability, with a special focus on accessible broadcasting services and online platforms. Panellists include:
Edward Santow, Human Rights Commissioner
Disability Discrimination Commissioner Dr Ben Gauntlett
Rosemary Kayess, Chair UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
Emma Bennison, CEO Blind Citizens Australia

Community Based Research
The Melbourne Disability Institute’s Community-Based Research Scheme provides research support and evaluation for innovative community programs that are making a difference in the lives of people with disability, their families and carers. Research support provided through the Scheme may include a scoping report, literature review, data analysis and a small research project and can lead to outcomes such as improved service delivery, the development of new services, improved ability to advocate effectively or the improved capacity to undertake future research projects.
The scheme will launch in July. Please stay tuned to the MDI website for more information. In the meantime, please contact Campbell Message at campbell.message@unimelb.edu.au with any questions.
