Bishop's Homily for Trinity Sunday, Year B

[St. Patrick Church, Kaimuki (Confirmation & First Communion); Immaculate Conception Church, Ewa (Confirmation & First Communion); Newman Center/Holy Spirit Parish, Manoa (Confirmation & First Communion)]

I am sure that for all of you children, your parents only have to tell you something once, and you immediately do it, right?  They say, “Do your homework,” and you drop whatever you are doing until you finish your homework.  They say, “Eat your vegetables,” and of course those vegetables quickly disappear into your stomach.  They say, “Turn off that video game,” and boom, it is off!  Probably not!!!  Sometimes it takes them two or three times to tell you something before you finally get it and know that they really want you to do what they say for your own ultimate good.

But I have news for you!  This is not something that happens only to children.  Sometimes all of us, no matter how old, have to be told something over and over before we finally “get it.”  One of those things is God telling us how much he loves us.  Read more...

Hawaii Events Align with National Eucharistic Revival

The inscription on the walking stick reads, “Lahaina 08.08.23 / ‘Even should she forget, I will never forget you.’” (Isaiah 49:15-16) (Courtesy Father Ese’ese “Ace” Tui)

Hawaii Catholic Herald

The U.S. Catholic Church is in the midst of a spiritual renewal, and the Diocese of Honolulu is doing its part to inspire isle Catholics to reinvigorate and spread their faith.

Two years ago the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops launched the National Eucharistic Revival, with the goal of “rekindling a living faith in the hearts of Catholics across America (and) unleashing a new missionary chapter at this pivotal moment in church history,” according to the movement’s website.

The initiative is slated to last three years — though the hope is that Catholics will continue to spread the message beyond 2025, which Pope Francis has declared a jubilee year for the church. Read more...

Rallying to Respond to the Crisis in Haiti

(Mini Onion / Shutterstock.com)

From the Office for Social Ministry

“I am thinking of Haiti, where a state of emergency is in force and the population is desperate because of the collapse of the health system, the shortage of food, and the violence that drives people to flee.” - Pope Francis (April 28, 2024)

In his continual prayers for all those in war-torn countries around the world, Pope Francis recently added a heartfelt appeal for the long-suffering people of Haiti who are currently experiencing increasing deadly chaos. After decades of severe economic hardships, the assassination of their president has led to uncontrolled  gang violence currently holding the country hostage and crippling this small Caribbean nation. Our Holy Father is urging everyone to pray and contribute whatever they can to bring back peace and reconciliation in Haiti. Now that a new governmental body has been sworn in, Pope Francis has offered this prayer intention: “We entrust to the Lord the work of the new Transitional Presidential Council that took office last Thursday in Port au Prince, so that with the renewed support of the international community, it may lead the country to achieve the peace and stability it so badly needs.” Read more...

Saint of the Week

Saint Paul VI
1897–1978
Memorial - May 29

Giovanni Battista Montini was born in northern Italy, about fifty miles east of Milan. He was the second of three boys. His father was an attorney who ran a Catholic newspaper in the Province of Brescia and a member of the Italian Catholic Action, a lay organization that advocated for a greater influence of the Catholic faith within society. His mother was from a wealthy noble family, but her parents’ death when she was young resulted in her spending much of her teenage years in a boarding school in Milan run by French nuns. As a child, Giovanni was called “Battista” by his family. He was educated by Jesuits, and enjoyed sports and playing cards. Read more...
