Upcoming EventsIntroduction to Turnitin New Faculty Institute: Teaching for Student Success Introduction to CourseWorks Teaching with Technology at CBS Active Learning with Poll Everywhere Promoting Inclusive Excellence Teaching AssistantsAs a reminder, TAs should not be enrolled simultaneously in the course for which they are providing assistance. In certain cases, faculty may petition the Senior Vice Dean for Curriculum and Programs to hire a TA who is enrolled as a student in the course. In cases of simultaneous enrollment, TAs are strictly prohibited from assisting faculty with any course grading. Visit “Hiring and Utilizing Teaching Assistants” for more information and contact HR if you have questions about hiring a TA. TA Roles in Canvas:TAs are enrolled in Canvas courses by the division staff. As of May 11, there are now only two TA roles in Canvas:
The CA and Enhanced CA roles are no longer necessary and therefore no longer available. Outstanding TA AwardThank you to the faculty who nominated TAs for the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. Congratulations to the spring 2023 award recipients:
Provost AwardsIn case you missed it, the Office of the Provost recently announced that two Columbia Business School faculty have been recognized in 2023 for their contributions toward diversity, equity and inclusion. Professor Modupe Akinola has been awarded the 2023 Faculty Service Award and Professor Dante Donati has been awarded a Junior Faculty Grant. Congratulations, Professor Akinola and Professor Donati! Proctorio UpdateProctorio now offers extensions for these web browsers: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Brave. ITG strongly recommends that Chrome be the browser used by CBS students and faculty, for Canvas quizzes/exams which use Proctorio. However, when Chrome is not an option, the user may try downloading a different browser extension. Students should contact ITG’s Student Support team for assistance with troubleshooting their device. Course EvaluationsFaculty can access their course evaluations within Canvas after final grades have been approved by the Registrar (generally approximately three weeks after the end of the term). Spring 2023 B-term evaluations are available now. Find more info on our website and the Course Evals FAQ page. Watch this screencast to see how to access your evals through Canvas. As a reminder, due to platform limitations, once the feedback window has closed, course evaluations cannot be reopened for individual students. If you need your evaluations sooner than the three week time frame, email samberg@gsb.columbia.edu and we will do our best to accommodate your request. Updates from MMGMultiMedia Group (MMG) shared these important updates regarding the classroom technology. Please email mmgroup@gsb.columbia.edu if you have questions. Fire Alarm Safety MessageIf there is a fire alarm while you’re in the classroom, the AV equipment will mute so everyone can hear the alarm and announcements. The control panels will freeze and look like this: Even if the alarm is ringing in only one building, the AV equipment will freeze in both Kravis and Geffen Halls. Academic Technology RefreshTo help refresh your memory, here are some guides for using the classroom technology (access via your Lionmail account (UNI@columbia.edu)): Class RecordingsPer Dean’s Office and University policies, all CBS courses are set to be recorded and available to enrolled students via Echo360 livestream unless an exception is granted. If there is a reason your course cannot be recorded - for example, you are an adjunct and your employer does not allow it - please complete the opt-out request form. In core courses, recordings must be available to students and are not considered for exemption. In elective courses, each class is recorded by default, but faculty can opt to share (make available/unavailable) recordings on a case-by-case basis. Common MMG Help Desk Requests If a monitor on the classroom podium is blank, usually it was accidentally turned off. To turn the monitor back on, press the power button on the top left side of the wacom monitor. There are spare batteries for lavalier mics in the podium drawer. If you need to dispose of used batteries, you may leave the loose batteries in the drawer or place them in one of the recycling bins that look like this: Contact UsEmail samberg@gsb.columbia.edu to request an in-person or virtual consultation to discuss your teaching needs or to suggest topics for a future newsletter or faculty development event.
