Sacred Hearts Brother Readies for Next Step Toward Priesthood

To be thought of as a “flag-bearer for Christ” is a great compliment indeed. But Sacred Hearts Father Johnathan Hurrell raised the metaphor one better when describing Sacred Hearts Brother Soane Siua — he called the seminarian an “instrument of God’s love.”
“Wherever he goes, whatever he does, he sees himself as a pathway — a river of God’s love into people’s lives,” said Father Hurrell, who is the superior of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary U.S. Province’s Formation House in Suva, Fiji. “But what I see him as is a real instrument of where God’s love can really reach out into people’s lives, whatever the situation, whatever ministry he is called to.”
Brother Siua will be ordained to the transitional diaconate at 5 p.m. April 19 at St. Patrick Church in Kaimuki. He will return to Fiji for his final semester as a seminarian, then will be ordained a priest in December in the Diocese of Brownsville, Texas. Read more...

Even Just One of These Children

From the Office for Social Ministry
“Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me” (Mt 18:5).
In the bright light of the Easter season, when the Church proclaims that life has overcome death, we are invited to look more closely at where that new life is most fragile—and most revealing. This year, Pope Leo XIV has chosen an urgent theme for the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees: “Even just one of these children.” It is a simple phrase, but it carries a profound challenge. The current migration situation presents new challenges that seriously threaten the rights and dignity of the youngest among us and require urgent effective responses. This is not a matter of discussing numbers or percentages, because “even just one” has the highest value. If even one child is forgotten, displaced, or left unprotected, then something essential in our shared humanity—and in our discipleship—remains unfinished.
Across the world, the number of children affected by war, displacement and natural disasters continues to explode exponentially. Behind every statistic is a child with a name, a face and a story—often marked by fear, but also by resilience and hope. Pope Leo’s call is not abstract. It is deeply personal. It reminds us that to welcome a child is not simply an act of charity; it is an encounter with Christ himself. Read more...

ʻOhana Mass, Apr 25
|
 |
|
Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
From the Office for Social Ministry
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 p.m. at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week
Saint Anselm of Canterbury
c. 1033–1109
Memorial - April 21
He was an Italian, Frenchman, and Englishman; a monk, prior, abbot, archbishop, philosopher, theologian, and spiritual writer; today he is a saint, a Doctor of the Church, and commonly referred to as the “Father of Scholasticism.” Anselm was born into a noble family in the town of Aosta, located in the Italian Alps. As a youth, his devout mother set a pious example which he readily followed. When Anselm was fifteen, he wanted to enter the monastic life, but his father would not give consent. So the abbot refused his entrance. His mother had since passed, so she could not intervene. Disillusioned, Anselm’s faith wavered for the next several years. Read more...
