Thank You to Diocese for 50th Anniversary Celebrations

To Parishioners of the Diocese of Honolulu

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On May 2, 2025, I had the privilege of giving thanks to God for fifty years of priesthood. It has been a wonderful privilege to serve the people of the Diocese of Oakland (for 30 years) and the Diocese of Honolulu (as Bishop for 20 years), and I have been richly blessed with so many saints who have inspired me – YOU!

I want to publicly thank all those who worked so hard to make my Golden Jubilee Celebrations such memorable events – not only at the main event on May 2, but also on the Islands of Kauai, Hawaii (in two venues!), and Maui-Lanai. I thank God for all of you who have honored me with your participation, your planning, your prayers and the many gifts you gave me.

As you know, I have designated all monetary gifts I received on this momentous occasion to the Cathedral Renewal Fund, so that we can complete the renovation of our beautiful and historic Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace. I am happy to report that your generosity brought in $194,424.30.Mahalo nui loa for honoring me by helping me with this important project for our diocese!

I pray that many other men will be inspired to serve the Lord in the priesthood. If they are called, I can assure you, they will find great joy!

May the Lord bless you always!

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Larry Silva
Bishop of Honolulu

Club Lay Groundwork for Fellowship, Faith-Filled Families

Almost a century ago, Japanese American Catholics in Hawaii formed a social and religious club where they could meet their peers and join in fellowship, prayer and fun.

This past July, surviving members of the St. Francis Xavier Club — including the daughter of one of its founders and those who joined in later decades — gathered for a small reunion where they reminisced about times and friends past.

Eloise Yano, whose father Francis Uyeda was one of five men who in 1927 founded what was then known as the Japanese Catholic Club, arranged the July 20 gathering. Among those in attendance were Carmen (Silva) Kiyabu, who joined in 1960; Walter and Winnie Lau, whose membership goes back to the 1940s; and the Laus’ daughter, Tina Lau. Read more...

From the Office for Social Ministry

“Whenever we encounter a poor person, we cannot look away, for that would prevent us from encountering the face of the Lord Jesus. In the poor, we can touch the flesh of Christ.” - Pope Francis, Message for the First World Day of the Poor, 2017

As the Church enthusiastically celebrates the final months of the Jubilee Year of Hope, we are called to always remember that mercy and hope walk hand in hand. Mercy opens our eyes to Christ in those who suffer. Hope strengthens our resilience to build a future of justice and compassion. Pope Francis emphasized this when he established the First World Day of the Poor in 2017 during his “Misericordia et Misera” message at the end of 2016 Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. Now his successor Pope Leo XIV, has carried that vision forward in his 2025 Message for the Ninth World Day of the Poor, reminding all: “The poor are creative subjects who challenge us to find novel ways of living out the Gospel today. Christian hope must move beyond comforting words to real responsibility and structural change to uplift the poor.”

That vision and mission of service with those in need was embodied anew in Honolulu this September. For the first time in history, the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary of Peter Claver—the largest Black Catholic lay organization in the United States—opened a unit outside the continental U.S. On September 12, 2025, at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Unit 419 of the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary of Peter Claver was officially established here and they named their first unit in Hawaii after St. Damien de Veuster and St. Marianne Cope of Moloka‘i. ʻOhana Mass, Sep 27

Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “ʻOhana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 p.m. at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week

Saint Padre Pio
1887–1968
Memorial - September 23

Saint Padre Pio was born Francesco Forgione in Pietrelcina, Italy, a rural town of about 4,000 people. As a child, he was called Franci (Frankie). His parents were peasant farm laborers, and the children assisted with the work. Franci was the third of seven (or eight) children, two (or three) of whom died in infancy, which was quite common at that time. The town centered around the local church of Saint Anna with continuous feasts, Masses, processions, novenas, and parish festivals. Read more...
