Federal Appropriations UpdateAmid ongoing FY 2024 budget negotiations, President Biden's FY 2025 budget proposal reveals modest increases for education and student success programs. Letters to the Administration & CongressThis week, ACCT submitted public comments to the Department of Labor regarding the proposed rules for the National Apprenticeship System Enhancements. ACCT recently joined dozens of organizations in a letter urging Congressional leaders to extend the Affordable Connectivity Program with continued funding in the next appropriations legislation. DOE Fall 2024 Undergraduate InternshipsApplications are currently open for the Fall 2024 term of two undergraduate internship programs offered by the Department of Energy (DOE): Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program and the Community College Internships (CCI) program. Interns in these programs collaborate directly with national laboratory scientists and engineers, contributing to research or technology projects. Both programs offer stipends. The application deadline is May 22, 2024, at 5:00 pm ET. To assist applicants, three workshops are scheduled to provide guidance on submitting a successful application and to offer insights into the internship experience from alumni of the CCI and SULI programs.
Connecting with the DOE-Biological & Environmental Research(BER)The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science, a key supporter of fundamental research in the physical sciences and overseer of 10 national laboratories, is extending its outreach to institutions of higher education nationwide. They will hold monthly virtual office hours, open to researchers from all institutions, providing insights into the six research programs and two research and development and production offices. These sessions provide valuable opportunities for questions and do not necessitate any prior affiliation with DOE or its national laboratories. Each week leading up to the first series of office hours, we will spotlight one of the eight programs. BER will hold virtual office hours on the fourth Tuesday of the month, 2-3 pm ET.
