Signing on the proverbial “dotted line” can be very scary. You want this house, but you know that signing for it will put you into tremendous debt for its mortgage. You love your fiancé, but you know that marriage is like signing your life away to this person, giving up much of your treasured independence. Having a child will surely change your life – or should we say “chain” your life? -- having to care for that child when it is fun and when it is not. Committing to be a disciple of Jesus for the rest of your life means taking his word seriously, that in order to gain our lives we must lose them and take up our crosses. And because of the burdens that these good things place upon us, so many people never “sign on the dotted line” – never buy a house, commit themselves in marriage, have children, or take being a Christian very seriously. And so it is that many people lead lives of quiet
desperation, not allowing themselves the adventure of commitment. Read more...

The Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines are returning home for the order’s centennial celebration this summer, and the faithful in Hawaii are invited to join the festivities.
Eighteen sisters who serve in the U.S. — from Hawaii to California to Texas — will travel to the Philippines in July for the multiday event.
“It will be a five-day celebration,” said Dominican Sister Delia Obenza, superior of the Hawaii region.
The celebration will be included in a 12-day pilgrimage from July 20-31 that still has openings for people who would like to take part. Read more...

Walk Together in Hope and Compassion
|
 |
|
(NadyaEugene / Shutterstock.com)
From the Office for Social Ministry
“This Lent, as we share in the grace of the Jubilee Year, I would like to propose a few reflections on what it means to journey together in hope, and on the summons to conversion that God in his mercy addresses to all of us, as individuals and as a community.” - Pope Francis, Message for Lent 2025
As Pope Francis recently lay seriously sick in a hospital bed, he sent out a worldwide Lenten message, urging us to reflect on how we can respond to the most vulnerable among us. He compassionately suggested “It would be a good Lenten exercise for us to compare our daily life with that of some migrant or foreigner, to learn how to sympathize with their experiences … so that we can better advance on our journey to the house of the Father.” The pope underscores the parallel between the 40 days of Lent and the Israelites’ 40 years in the desert seeking the Promised Land. He also connects the Lenten theme of “conversion” and the Jubilee 2025 them calling all to be “Pilgrims of Hope.” Our Holy Father points out: “A first call to conversion comes from the realization that all of us are pilgrims in this life.” As fellow pilgrims in this life, we are called to
conversion and to learn from one another’s trials by walking together in hope. Read more...

CRS Rice Bowl Story of Hope from Nigeria

 |
|
(Photo by Lauren Carroll for CRS)
Paying it Forward as a Lead Mother
Amina Bukar, a mother of five, is a well-respected leader and small business owner in Muna Moforo, Nigeria. In her village nutrition group, she teaches mothers how to prepare nutrient-rich porridge for their children to help them grow strong and healthy. This is important because in Nigeria, more than 25 million people face extreme hunger and lack access to nutritious food. Amina makes regular house visits to families in her community to provide support and knowledge for leading healthy lives.
Amina and her family used to live in their hometown of Marte. She owned a chicken farm and a store. Her husband, Garba, worked for a water and land conservation agency. But in 2014, violence in their community forced them to flee their village. Read more...

Talks for Youth and Adults, Feb-Mar
|
 |
|
Mondays & Thursdays in March at 7:00 p.m.
St. Patrick Church, Kaimuki
The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1231 states “By its very nature infant baptism requires a post baptismal catechumenate. Not only is there a need for instruction after baptism but also for the necessary flowering of baptismal grace in personal growth.
All are welcome to join these talks on Mondays and Thursdays from 7-8pm at St. Patrick Church in Kaimuki. These talks will be given by the missionary team of the Neocatechumenal Way in Hawai’i: Jonathan & Nazarena Stenger with their seven children, Fr. John Wadeson, and Benjamin Paz a seminarian for the Diocese of Philadelphia.
The Neocatechumenal Way is a post-baptismal catechumenate for adults to help people grow in their faith by living with the Scriptures and liturgy so as to experience it in small communities within the structure of the Parish. Pope Saint John Paul II wrote in a letter: “I acknowledge the Neocatechumenal Way as an itinerary of Catholic formation, valid for our society and for our times.”
For more information, please contact Jonathan and Nazarena Stenger at (808) 268-3993.

ʻOhana Mass, Mar 22
|
 |
|
Saturday, March 22, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “ʻOhana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint Frances of Rome
1384–1440
Memorial – March 9
Frances was born into an aristocratic family in the Eternal City of Rome near the famed Piazza Navona. From an early age, she was drawn to God and responded with much generosity. At the age of eleven, she told her father that she wanted to become a nun, but her father had other plans for her life. He informed her that he was giving her hand in marriage to Lorenzo Ponziani, a wealthy aristocrat who was a commander in the papal army. Frances struggled with her father’s decision and brought her concern to a local priest. After listening to her, the priest said to her, “Are you crying because you want to do God’s will or because you want God to do your will?” She quickly responded that she wanted God’s will, and the matter was settled. At the age of twelve, Frances was married. Read more...
