Holy Days of Obligation

Please note that in the Diocese of Honolulu, in addition to all Sundays of the year, there are only two Holy Days of Obligation on which the faithful are obliged to attend Mass: December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary; and December 25, Christmas (which falls on a Sunday this year).  Be sure to check your parish’s Mass schedule for these special days of our faith.

Merger of Parishes

On Wednesday, November 28, 2022, Bishop Silva announced the merger of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Papaikou (which includes Good Shepherd Church Honomu), and St. Anthony Parish, Papaaloa (with a mailing address in Laupahoehoe) into a single parish, effective January 1, 2023. This newly configured parish will be named “Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish,” with each church retaining its original title. Reverend Stephen Macedo was appointed as pastor of this newly configured parish, continuing his prior term as pastor of the parishes separately.

Jerry Correa was St. Francis Healthcare CEO for 10 Years

By Patrick Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald

Jerry J. Correa, the first non-Franciscan to head St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii, who steered the organization through some of its roughest years to see his vision of elder care grow to fruition, died unexpectedly Oct. 27. He was 58.

He had worked for St. Francis 24 years, the last 10 of those years as president and chief executive officer.

Bishop Larry Silva called Correa “a man who was full of love and passion” who “gave himself unselfishly to the community in Hawaii.” Read more...

Good News for SNAP Recipients

(Jonathan Weiss/Shutterstock.com)

From the Office for Social Ministry

Governor Ige issued a fifth Emergency Proclamation related to SNAP benefits whereby recipients will receive an increase each month thanks to federal COVID Relief Funding. This additional emergency allocation has been extended thru the holidays till January 16, 2023. Based on the State of Hawaii’s application to the USDA requesting emergency allotment funding, 85,590 families totaling 159,725 individuals rely on SNAP (previously known as Food Stamps).

The State Department of Human Services’ Benefit, Employment and Support Services Division (BESSD) through its Processing Centers manages our SNAP program. Since COVID, they’ve processed a large number of new SNAP recipients. Households impacted by job loss or reduced wages suddenly found they qualified for supplemental food assistance due to the pandemic. Read more...

Prayers at the Advent Wreath - Second Week

Two candles are lighted on the second Sunday by the oldest child and allowed to burn as before. The prayer for the second week is:

Leader: Let us pray. O Lord, stir up our hearts that we may prepare for your only begotten Son, that through his coming we may be made worthy to serve you with pure souls. Through Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

All: Amen.

Advent Resources from the USCCB

Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas.

The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas.

Saint of the Week

Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
c. 15 B.C.
Solemnity – December 8

The Ark of the Covenant was a sumptuously adorned chest housing the Jews’ most sacred objects: the tablets of the Ten Commandments, a pot of manna, and Aaron’s staff. Before its disappearance, the Ark was the centerpiece of the Holy of Holies, the mysterious chamber lying behind the curtain in Jerusalem’s Temple. Only the high priest dared to enter this sacred chamber. Mary is the Ark of the New Covenant. She is not a gold-encrusted trunk filled with artifacts but the flesh-and-blood person whose womb nurtured Jesus Christ. Today’s feast celebrates Mary’s own stainless conception, the remote preparation that formed her into that vessel of honor where the living Word first sprang to life. God prepared Mary from her first instant for this great purpose—to be the perfect edifice to carry, birth, and mother the Son of God, one to whom any taint of sin would be repugnant. Read more...
