Message from the Executive Principal

Dear Parents,

With a busy calendar, the weeks seem to fly by and it is amazing to think we are already more than halfway through March. It highlights the importance for all of us to enjoy the small moments because if we aren’t present to what is happening now, it can fly by too fast.

This week I had the chance to speak to the Primary school assembly about leadership and what it means to be a leader. I spoke about how important it is to know yourself so that when times are tough you are clear about the values and morals that you can rely on. I also shared that I see leadership as having the courage to make the right decision in difficult situations, which means we all have to be leaders at some point and stand up for what we believe in.

Once activities finish for the day, the school campus can sometimes feel eerily quiet. However, I have enjoyed having my office window open and listening to our College orchestra rehearse into the evening over recent weeks. The commitment of the students to come back when everyone else has gone home is very impressive and the quality of the music is outstanding. I encourage you to keep an eye out for upcoming performances, you will be amazed by the talent on display.

While a small number of sporting events were canceled due to teacher strikes, there was still plenty of great competition, especially for our College volleyball team that competed in an Auckland-wide competition over three days. The highlight for the week was, of course, a resounding victory for our staff in a touch rugby game against College students. While these games are plenty of fun, it also models the fun, social side of keeping fit and healthy.

I hope to see many of you at the Garden Party taking place on Friday 31st March. While it will be a great chance for us to get to know each other, it will also be an opportunity for you to get to know each otherother parents. With the various restrictions over recent years there have been limited opportunities for you to come together as a parent group and I encourage you to take this chance to do so.

On a separate note, can I please ask for your support in taking care when parking in the business area at the shops opposite the school. I have been contacted recently about some near misses with pedestrians and also no parks being available for customers of the businesses. Please take note of any parking restrictions and act in accordance with them.

We all recognize the importance of finding balance in our lives but it is something that we need to be mindful to support in our young people. Students will often pour huge amounts of time and energy into their passion, which is great but can be to the detriment of their overall well-being. I encourage you to talk to your child about finding a balance between schoolwork, activities, and simple downtime. If it is something they are struggling with, please reach out and our staff will happily provide some ideas for you to support your child.

I hope you all enjoy a great weekend ahead.

Message from the Principal of College

Kia ora e te whānau

At Pinehurst School we offer our students many opportunities for leadership and service. We believe that these opportunities encourage personal growth and help to develop self-esteem whilst also allowing students to take measured risks in a safe environment. At Year 9-13 assembly on Thursday, we awarded badges to our new student councillors. There are five student councils in the College - Arts, Enviromental, Student, Sport and Citizenship. Councils lead and manage events through the school year under the mentorship of a House Dean or Mr Ronayne and through these activities students are encouraged to strive for personal excellence outside of the classroom. They need to be organised and responsible, and to be authentic; all of these are important life skills. This year, we have already had a fundraiser organised by the Citizenship Council and I am looking forward to seeing what else the councils have in store for us for the rest of the year.

On Monday our students were treated to a visit from Paws Leading Us who brought along three of their guide dogs for photographs and hugs.  There were ice blocks and other treats for sale along with soft toy dogs, fifty of which sold in the first ten minutes! It was a lovely way to start the week and a great fundraising event.

Mr Johansen’s office is looking more like a supermarket every day after students organised a College Food Drive to help some of those families who were affected by Cyclone Gabrielle. Whilst this was not something we could have planned for, a group of students were extremely keen to help and to do something useful for those affected. The drive has been very successful, and we now have a large amount of non-perishable goods to donate at the end of the day. Thank you to all of those families who helped with this and thank you to Mr Johansen for donating his office space for the week, I am sure there will be many people who benefit.

Sports are in full flow as we transition from summer to winter codes. The netball courts have been abuzz with practices and trials most days this week and hockey registrations and trials are also taking place. For the last three days, our Volleyball teams have been at a college tournament. This is the first time we have taken Volleyball teams to a tournament and students are having a great experience.

As we head into the weekend, our Year 7 and Year 9 students will be preparing themselves for camp next week. It will be quieter around the College next week with two of our year groups out on amazing adventures and we will be eagerly awaiting news and photographs of their experiences.

I hope you have a lovely weekend.

Toi o te wiki

Our art of the week highlights the excellent photographic work created by our Year 10 IGCSE Art and Design students.

Students have been exploring ‘The Rules of Composition in Photography’ and have used contrasting tones, rules of thirds, leading lines and light to capture the beauty of everyday objects.

Ka rawe, Year 10!

A2 Classics

In A2 Classics we have been learning about the emperors Claudius, Nero, Domitian, and Trajan. Lately we have been looking at the different architecture that they had built, some benefitted themselves and others benefitted Romans. Last week the students chose one building to recreate out of Lego. Here you can see the Lego creation and the original that they were based on.

Paws Leading us!

On Monday lunchtime, the Student Council welcomed three guide dogs, Lady, Lottie, and Venice to Pinehurst, the ‘Paws Leading Us’ Fundraiser. Merchandise and ice block sales, as well as generous donations were all around, and all profits went towards to Blind Low Vision Foundation. The Foundation provides support and service to people living with visual impairments throughout Aotearoa.

Our students were exhilarated to spend time with the dogs, who amazed everybody with their intelligence, gentle nature, and incredible cuteness! Many students completed the obstacle course which helped replicate the experience of going about daily life as a visually impaired individual. We are very grateful for everyone who came along, and hope they were able to take away fun and meaningful memories.

We raised $1090.60!!

A2 Physical Education

Students have been developing their understanding of components of fitness and applying that knowledge to improve the performance of other athletes. Last week, students did some experimenting with different methods to improve flexibility. Each group performed a range of tests of flexibility at different joints and then undertook three different types of flexibility training; ballistic, static and dynamic stretching. Following the session, they then completed the tests again to analyse what improvements, if any, had been made.

Boys' Volleyball

Volleyball has continued to grow at Pinehurst and the boys' teams have had some great success in the Senior North Harbour competition. Team 1 played a straight final on Wednesday night against Birkenhead, beating them 2 sets to 0 to top their pool. They have also been busy this week at Auckland Champs, honing their skills and playing against some talented opposition.

Team 2 had a harder route to success, having to play a 3-way playoff on the way to their pool win. A tight match against Glenfield saw the game go to 15-15 in the final set with Pinehurst holding their nerve after several match points to take the win. They then faced a well organised Kristin team, but held their nerve to win in straight sets.

Team 3 was made of mostly juniors (Year 9 and 10) and have made some huge progress this term. They finished 8th in their pool but can be proud of their performances with several very close games. We look forward to seeing what the junior boys can do when they start their competition in Term 4.

Year 9 Science

This week in Science our Year 9 students have been investigating the transport systems in plants. Students used coloured dyes and dissected stems to investigate the route water travels through a plant.

Auckland Champs Tournament

Our Boys and Girls 1st team entered into the Auckland Secondary School tournament this week for the first time. The level of volleyball is high and the players have risen to the occasion playing great volleyball.; they have pushed themselves hard and improved in leaps and bounds – literally. The days have been long and the muscles sore and achy, but they can hold their heads up high. Their performance bodes well for the future of volleyball at Pinehurst! Well done to both teams!!

North Harbour Secondary Schools Athletic Champs

Pinehurst students, Olivia Frame, Fernanda Tirado, and Andrew Graham, went to the NHSS Athletic Champs. To enter events, students are required to meet the qualifying standards. Congratulations to Fernanda who placed 1st Hammer, 1st Long Jump, 1st Discus in the Junior Girls age group.

North Harbour Secondary Schools 9 Hole Competition

Team 1, Yeonsoo Son, Grace Kim, Sophie Yu, Lingyao, continued to perform well in the NHSS 9 Hole competition, placing 2nd overall. They now cross over with the Auckland teams and will play in the semi-finals against Kings College on Monday. We wish them well!

Team 2, Anisa Rammanee, Sarah Li, Sophia Jones, Oliver Maher, played against Takapuna in their finals game last Monday. They were well matched teams and ended up with a draw after playing 9 holes. Rather than a re-match, both teams agreed to share first place. Well done!

Message from the Principal of Primary

Kia ora,

At certain times in the year, we hold formal assemblies where students, staff and parents come together to celebrate special events such as prizegivings, the speech competition and our leadership assembly. Students sensed there was a little more formality to the assembly held on Tuesday and listened with interest to various presenters speaking about what leadership means to them. In very young children, leadership is all about leading yourself and learning to navigate the world with a growing sense of identity. Later in Primary, students can begin to offer service to their peers and to the school by taking on responsibilities that help larger groups of people.

Our assembly was a recognition of the Primary leaders for 2023 and an anticipation of the value they will add to the Primary this year. We elect and select as a process of choosing our leaders, every Year 6 student has a responsibility as a councillor, peer mediator, Librarian, arts, and cultural councillor, iLead or House captain. From Year 3 to 5 each class elects two councillors to represent them and to give them a class voice. Four Head councillors are chosen too, this year our fabulous four as they are calling themselves are, Mimie Lee, Ethan Han, Serena Yang and Ryann Wang. We are really excited to have them as leaders, and they represented themselves beautifully with their chosen topic on leadership. Ethan gave his pepeha, Mimie talked about being a role model, Ryan shared his leadership profile and Serena shared leadership quotes. We didn’t give them any help with their presentations, and they really impressed us with their thoughtfulness and understanding of what leadership is. How amazing to be inspired by our young people.

Our peer mediators have a very important job at lunchtimes especially on the junior playgrounds and around the Year 3 to 4 play areas. They are trained to help students resolve minor disputes between each other as well as offer friendship to anyone that is feeling a bit sad or lonely. They will have their first meet, greet, and eat session today where eat their lunch with younger classes and get to know them a little better. This is leadership in action and a way to demonstrate our values whilst at the same time developing leadership skills.

With three weeks to go we are planning for Term 2 whilst at the same time not slowing down on our learning. One of the things I love about working at Pinehurst is we start our programmes from the first day of term, and as our founding principal Sherida Penman Walters used to say, we teach until the last minute of the last day. There is still so much to learn before the term ends. We are looking forward to the winter sports season though and registrations are going out for a range of winter sports such as hockey, netball, and snowsports as well as the ongoing sports offered in Term 1. Team sports are so good for young children as they learn skills to play and work together and so too are individual sports such as skiing where children often excel because they can go at their own pace.

Kia pai tō rā whakata, have a good weekend.

Ngā mihi,

Sian

PE Year 0-3

This term in PE our year 0 - 3 students are starting the year focusing on enjoyment, fundamental movement skills and their ability to strike a ball.

Within our PE lessons we implement the moving smart perceptual movement programme (MSPMP), which is designed to help our learners understand and control their bodies to better assist in the day-to-day learning needs of our students. Students are required to complete challenges that involve them not only moving but also thinking about how their bodies are moving and what works best for them.

Alongside the MSPMP programme we are focusing on striking skills in term 1. Working on our student's ability to read the movement of a ball and then use an object in their hand to hit it. This requires fundamental hand eye coordination as well as the ability to understand ball tracking, these skills can be linked to sports such as tennis, badminton, cricket, hockey and golf.

It is important to remember that your physical activity ability is developed in all area's of your life and like anything the more you can practise and move the better you will become and the healthier your overall wellbeing will be.

Year 5-6 Interhouse Swimming

Last week, we held the Year 5-6 Interhouse Swimming for all students. It was a great day out and the students were so excited to get into the pool and complete their events. All the students performed extremely well and the prior swimming lessons that the classes had completed earlier in the term was a huge contributor to this.

There were 11 long standing records broken on the day, with April Lin claiming 8 records and Eddie Li claiming 3 records respectively. Every year/gender group was extremely tight in terms of competition, which is a great sign for the upcoming Interschool swimming competitions.

A huge congratulations to the students below who placed in the top 3 in their year/gender group. These students along with a few other outstanding performers will go on to represent Pinehurst at the Mid Bays Competition next week. We wish them all the best in their upcoming competitions.

Super Cluster Tennis Tournament

On Monday, we took a very strong team to the Super Cluster Tennis tournament which was held at Campbells Bay Tennis Club. Cathy Situ and April Lin represented Pinehurst in the Girls Singles and Xinxin Li & Charlotte Yu combined as doubles partners, competing in the Girls Doubles competition. Ethan Zhou and Ryann Wang returned for a second year, representing Pinehurst in the Boys Singles competition. Devin Bu and Edward Niu were a powerful doubles team, competing in the Boys Doubles competition. All students performed to the best of their ability and enjoyed competing against students from other schools.  A huge congratulations to the following students who placed in the top 6 in their competition:

  • April Lin: 2nd place in the Girls Singles
  • Charlotte Yu & Xinxin Li: 3rd place in the Girls Doubles
  • Ryann Wang: 5th place in the Boys Singles
  • Ethan Zhou: 6th place in the Boys Singles

P9 Sprinkling Kindness

Kindness!  This has been a focus word that we have been using to help us build our classroom culture.  One thing that we have been doing to promote kindness is using a happy box. Our happy box is full of happy, kind and positive quotes.  If a student is feeling sad, they can pick a card for themselves or if they see someone that needs some ‘kind’ words, they are able to choose a card for their classmate.  Sammy our class Sloth, sits with the happy box, and he always has a smile and offers hugs if needed too.  Carlo was feeling sad, and he picked out “Love your life because your life loves you.”  Carlo held on to his card for the rest of the afternoon.  “The card made me feel not sad anymore” said Carlo.

Having our college buddies visit us seemed an ideal opportunity for P9 to share their thoughts and get creative.

Sunflowers are well-known for being a happy flower and are the perfect bloom to brighten someone’s mood.  So, we created sunflowers.  The petals all have a word or a quote that P9 students link to what kindness means to them.

“To make my friends happy all they have to do is pick a number between 1-12 and read the kindness quote on the petal.” Oscar stated.

“The sun is shining, so be happy!” This is Clara’s favourite quote.

Aston likes - “We love you.”

P11 Art Focus: The Eyes Have It

In P11 we have been practising sketching techniques using shading to help us sketch parts of our faces.

This week we focused on our eyes.

The techniques of shading when using pencils to sketch have helped us to create clear, detailed diagrams in Science and to record our visualisations in Reading.

Some tips we can share from our art lessons are:

  • Use the side of the pencil to create a shadow
  • Use dark and light tones to show different shades on our sketches
  • Use the correct pencil grip and handwriting hand to hold the pencil

We have also used crayon and dye to help create a visualization of our pepeha to show our whakapapa and our family backgrounds.

Amazing Recounts

The students in P21 have been working hard with their Big Writing mission trying to persuade Mr Turner to take part in the Time Capsule Project. They have written very convincing persuasive letters focusing on using sophisticated features such as countering objections with answers, flattery, adverbials (including fronted adverbials) and modal verbs to indicate degrees of possibility. They have just finished writing a personal memory (recount) which will be shared with the students at Mr Turners school to give them examples of what can be included in a time capsule.  They focused closely on just one memory and described the moment using vivid descriptions, including dialogue and humour to develop characters, and move action forward. The students were challenged  to use a metaphor or personification in their descriptions and to use senses to describe.  After a peer review and some up-levelling the students are all very proud of their finished amazing recounts.
