Outsiderville: Newly launched outsider music label

St. Petersburg-based outsider art foundation Outsiderville has launched a label dedicated to outsider music.

"ANO "OUTSIDERVILLE" (St. Petersburg, Russia), was organized in 2013 and actively helps people with mental disorders in their social rehabilitation with support for creative self-realization."

"The art of outsiders, people with mental disabilities, or self-taught artists working outside the professional social institutions is not limited to visual arts. There are outsider poetry, literature, music, and so on. We decided to expand our project and launch a music label to publish, combine, and popularize outsider music."

"Outsider music isn't necessarily disharmonious, clumsy, raw, or anxious. Just like the experiences and ideas of each artist, it is always different. We are not limited by any particular genre and will be releasing records ranging from krautrock and experimental electronic music to modern classical music."

You can listen to their releases on the Outsiderville official Bandcamp account.

If you're a musician, don't be afraid to share your music with them. They are open to everything that goes beyond genre conventions and sounds strange or weird.

Art in quarantine: Steven Hirsch

New York resident Steven Hirsch is well-known for his courthouse photography as well as documentary work.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, Hirsch has turned his attention to a new medium: drawing.

Quarantine, Hirsch. 2020, pencil on paper, 8" x 6"

"I started drawing the virus the same day I started to self-quarantine. I had never made a drawing before. I spent the next two months looking out the window at a deserted and ravaged New York City, listening to the constant drone of sirens wailing as ambulances thundered up First Avenue filled with the casualties of the plague."

Lungs, Hirsch. 2020, acrylic and pencils on paper, 6" x 8"

"I was scared. I knew fear. As a photojournalist I had photographed the World Trade Center that fateful morning on 9/11 and a few years later beat a ravaging disease that almost took my life."

"It seemed like a time to start doing something different considering the world flipped upside down in a week [...] The virus seemed like the only thing that made sense to draw since my work is autobiographical. I try to draw one a day."

Welcome to Buffalo, Hirsch. 2020, acrylic and pencil on paper, 6" x 8"
