The month of May for Karinya House is a celebration of women. We all know amazing women. At Karinya we have the privilege of meeting amazing women every day. Given the work of Karinya House, Mother’s Day is also a significant day. You can read more about May, many other significant days in May and our major annual appeal at the link below. The image for the May 2022 appeal is with thanks to one strong young amazing female artist (@stellaevans_art), building on the work of another incredible female artist (@themuccibird). P.S. Oh yes, for those who know our proclivity for the nature of the days, we think the autumn days so far have been stunning! A little wet at the end just to freshen things up for May perhaps... About Karinya HouseAs part of The Days of May celebration, we are thankful to launch the latest "About Karinya House" video. We thank our Friends at Missing Bits Productions for their time and talent, gifted to us through the production of this video. Enjoy! Karinya House currently...Current Financial Year (as at 20/04/22) 162 unique women supported, who in turn care for 209 children, 136 of whom are under school age. 50 babies have been born to women we have walked alongside during the 2021/2022 financial year to date. 4 women have moved from living at Karinya into an appropriate and safe ACT Housing Property. 5 others have chosen to move from Karinya into other less safe options, due to the unavailability of a timely housing allocation. Currently, there are: 11 women in residence with 3 babies due, 6 babies under 1, 7 toddlers and 2 primary school age children We continue to support many women in an outreach capacity. 82% of women currently receiving full casework support are awaiting a Housing ACT Property Allocation. 65% of the women currently awaiting an allocation are on the top two waiting lists (Priority or High Needs), meaning they are facing a 338 - 1040 day wait time. For women on the standard allocation list, the wait list is 1585 days on average. We have residents who have been living at Karinya for over 12 months. We continue to work with our valued partners at Housing ACT, in response to the current and concerning housing crisis. Sadly, solutions are not easily identified or funded. * Photo Image by Aditya Romansa on Unsplash *** New Bank Account ***Karinya House is now banking with Beyond Bank, a B-Corporation banking institution. As part of this change we have a new bank account. For EFT donors, we do need you to update your EFT donation as set up from your own bank account, please. Many EFT donors have now completed this, but we know there are a few more of you out there. The option to set up your donation via EFT is available via our website. (Once your donation is pledged, you still need to set up the transfer from your own account.) Some of our Friends keep the KH Bank Details handy for the occasional donation. Please change your records to note the new KH Bank Details, which can be obtained by emailing us. And remember it helps us if you do use your name as the reference when making an EFT donation directly (and not through the website). If you send us an email also, we can make sure the receipt gets to you! If you bank with Beyond Bank and you have a Community Reward Account, you can nominate Karinya House to benefit from your savings (at no cost to you)! Now there's something to ponder. Images of Karinya VillagersAre you part of the Karinya Village? Do you donate financially, annually or on a recurring basis? We know there are at least 500 Karinya Villagers. If so, we would love an image of you, or an image that represents you or your favourite thing. To go with the wall of Karinya Partners on our website, we are also creating an image of our Village on our website and we would love your image to be there. A tangible vision of the community who are here for the women we walk alongside. The community of which we are all a part. Answer the call please - Send us an image that represents you. Snippets....We are continuing to share with you the quotes from women interviewed as part of the Erin Journey Map project, as outlined in our last eNewsletter. In discussion with a number of women we documented their journey. We thank each and every woman we walk alongside for allowing us to share their path for a while. We have mapped the journey across 6 stages: Help, Find, Trust, Commit, Experience, Transition. In the Find and Trust stages, comments included: The best way to connect with women who are in Erin’s situation is through other women who have had similar experiences. It was hard to allow people to see your vulnerability, to allow people to see aspects of your life that you need help with. Consistently having those meetings with the same person, at the same place, was important. I do not believe you can get that level of trust, communicate your needs and unpack all your stuff with just one meeting or with different people. So that was important and was pivotal to building trust for what came after that. #humansofkarinya #ourvillage #supportingwomen #walkingalongside #erinsjourney 💜🌸 *Erin is not one woman. The name, which comes from one of our early founders, is representative of the thousands of women we have walked alongside in the last 25 years. We give thanks ....To Daramalan College. One of their school captains, Janaya, kindly sent word to let us know Karinya has been chosen as the charity to support in 2022. We thank the Daramalan College community for walking alongside with us this year. To the members of the Canberra Southern Cross Club who have linked their membership card to Karinya House, to direct Community Rewards partner funding to Karinya House. For the January to March quarter, the community rewards donation exceeded $4,000. This is simply wonderful! Thank you for thinking of Karinya as you eat and drink at your favourite CSCC venue! CSCC are again also offering their fabulous Mother's Day High Tea for Mother's Day this year. To all the women we will celebrate during May. During May - We also celebrate, give thanks for and remember...Labour Day, International Day of the Midwife, International Nurses Day, International Day of Families, National Volunteers Week and National Sorry Day. Every one of these days has meaning here at Karinya House and the services we provide, and significance for women. #supportingwomen #standingalongside #ourvillage #ourcommunity We acknowledge the Ngunnawal and Wiradjuri people, and other traditional custodians of the lands across which we work and live. We pay respect to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be, Aboriginal land. |
