[Sacred Heart Church, Punahou (Installation of Pastor); Our Lady of the Mount Church, Kalihi (155th Anniversary of the Parish)]
Butchers know it. Bakers know it. Candlestick makers know it. Fire changes things. Butchers know that a raw cut of meat can be transformed into a delicious steak when it is fired on the grill. Bakers know that bland dough can become delicious breads, cakes or cookies when the fire of the oven is applied. Candlestick makers know that their creations disappear with fire, but before they do, they give warmth and light to all who see them.
So it is that Jesus reminds us that he has come to set the world on fire, to bring about change, to call us to repentance, and to transform death into life. We sometimes cling to our bland and lethargic ways, but Jesus knows that we will only be truly alive if we allow the fire of his love to burn and transform us. Read more...

Father Khanh Pham-Nguyen’s unwavering faith in God carried him across the sea more than 40 years ago from Vietnam to a refugee camp in the Philippines, and later gave him the fortitude to successfully pursue an expansion project for Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Honolulu, the parish he shepherded for more than a decade.
On July 27, not long after completing another journey — a historic pilgrimage through Portugal and Spain — Father Pham-Nguyen died peacefully in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was 60 years old.
Father Pham-Nguyen experienced health complications after finishing the 150-mile pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago (“The Way of St. James”), traveling from Portugal to Spain. He was visiting family in Albuquerque when he was hospitalized. Read more...

Talk Story: Migrants as Missionaries of Hope
|

From the Office for Social Ministry
“Many migrants, refugees and displaced persons are privileged witnesses of hope. Indeed, they demonstrate this daily through their resilience and trust in God, as they face adversity while seeking a future in which they glimpse that integral human development and happiness are possible.” - Pope Leo XIV Jubilee Year Message for 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2025
As the Catholic Church celebrates the Jubilee Year under the theme Pilgrims of Hope, our new Pope Leo XIV has chosen “Migrants as Missionaries of Hope” as the focus for the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees in 2025. In his message released this August, Pope Leo emphasized the deep connection between migration and hope: “The search for happiness, and the prospect of finding it beyond one’s place of origin, is certainly one of the main motivations for the movement of people today.” Our Holy Father also highlighted some ways migrants and refugees can contribute to where they are welcomed. “In a special way, Catholic migrants and refugees can become missionaries of hope in the countries that welcome them, forging new paths of faith where the message of Jesus Christ has not yet arrived or initiating interreligious dialogue based on everyday life and the
search for common values.” Their presence, he said, should be recognized not only as a gift to the Church, but also an opportunity for renewal. “In this way, migrants and refugees are recognized as brothers and sisters, part of a family in which they can express their talents and participate fully in community life.” Read more...

Broken By Design: How Modern Law and Technology Are Tearing Children from Their Roots
Across America—and increasingly here in Hawaii—the family is under intense cultural and political pressure. From no-fault divorce to surrogacy markets and gender ideology, today’s trends often prioritize adult desires at the expense of children’s needs. In this eye-opening presentation, we’ll examine the powerful forces pulling apart the family, including the redefinition of marriage, the rise of the fertility industry, and emerging legal threats to parental rights.
Rooted in both faith and evidence, we’ll explore why children flourish best when raised by both their mother and father—and why this foundation matters in everything from education and reproductive technologies to modern family law. Together, we’ll reflect on what it means to be a truly pro-child society—one that challenges adults to sacrifice for the sake of the next generation.

ʻOhana Mass, Aug 23
|
 |
|
Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “ʻOhana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 p.m. at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week
Saint Pius X
1572–1641
Memorial - August 21
Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto was born in Riese, Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, present-day Italy. He was born into a poor family, the second of ten children. His father was a postman and his mother a seamstress. His family was very devout and Giuseppe learned the Catholic faith by both word and example. As a child, he was educated at home and by the local parish priest, Father Tito Fusaroni, who was very impressed by Giuseppe’s piety and intelligence. As a result, when Giuseppe was old enough, Father Fusaroni paid for his education at the gymnasium of Castelfranco Veneto, just a few miles from his home to which he walked each day. Because he was poor, he was often teased by the other students, but this only built his character. Read more...
