Pope at Angelus: Prayer is Medicine for Faith, Restoring the Soul

By Thaddeus Jones
Vatican News, October 16, 2022

Offering his reflections on the Sunday Gospel, Pope Francis recalled the question Jesus asked, which we can also ask ourselves today: “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Lk 18:8)

He would find, unfortunately, many wars, poverty, and inequality, but also incredible technological advances with people always rushing and busy, said the Pope. But more importantly, he asked if the Lord would find people who put God at the centre of their lives.  Read more...

The parish cemetery is making a comeback in Hawaii. But instead of an overgrown plot of ancient headstones there is a polished, granite-faced collection of urn niches built into a church’s exterior wall.

Bishop Larry Silva blessed the diocese’s first such columbaria Oct. 1 at St. Ann Church in Kaneohe.

The blessing followed presentations at diocesan Stewardship Day at St. Ann Parish about the Hawaii’s new columbarium project by two of its administrators — Duane Pavao, Director of Cemeteries for the Diocese of Honolulu, and his boss, Jim Peterson, Director of Mission Services for Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services (CFCS). (Columbaria is the plural of columbarium.)  Read more...

"Hope Heal Renew" - A Virtual Catholic Catechetical Conference, Nov 3-5

November 3 - 5, 2022

The theme of this year's Hope, Heal, Renew Catholic Virtual Conference is Gratefully Rejoicing as the Body of Christ can be understood as emblematic of Christian discipleship: that the Risen Christ accompanies us, teaches us, nourishes us by His Real Presence in the Eucharist, and sends us – gratefully rejoicing – to be life for the world as He is for us.

Whether participating as an individual, household, or watch party, you will find a welcoming community of faith as we explore this theme through experiences of prayer, liturgy, and spiritual retreat; lively and interactive presentations; conversation and laughter during “meet ups” with fellow participants, conference planners and exhibitors; and so much more.

Saint of the Week

Saint Luke, Evangelist & Gospel Writer
First Century
Feast – October 18
Patron Saint of artists, physicians, and surgeons

Saint Luke was one of the four Evangelists but not one of the Twelve Apostles. Like Saint Mark, Luke was not among that select group who walked step by step alongside Jesus as he journeyed through Palestine. Luke was more likely a disciple of Saint Paul, who mentions a Luke who accompanies him on his missionary journeys. Little is known with certainty of Luke’s life. What is known is that he wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles—over a quarter of the New Testament. The two volumes of Luke and Acts are foundational works for knowing Jesus Christ and the early Church.  Read more...
