Nichelle Soriano Torno says she has always dreamed of writing a book, but never imagined her work would be picked up by one of the largest Catholic publishers.

Ascension Press, known for the podcasts “The Bible in a Year” and “The Catechism in a Year” with Father Mike Schmitz, faith formation books and more, has published “A Place for Me in God’s Family Tree,” written by Torno and illustrated by her cousin, Jordan Vicente Yango of Washington state.

After much prayer and discernment, the two decided to write a book about Jesus’ genealogy for children. Read more...

Stewardship and Care for the ʻĀina

From the Office for Social Ministry

To hope and act with creation means above all to join forces and to walk together with all men and women of goodwill.” Pope Francis’s message Hope and Act with Creation for the 2024 World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation

The intense summer heat and extreme weather we are currently facing around the world are clear indicators of the pressing climate change crisis, a critical issue that Pope Francis has repeatedly addressed in his previous papal messages including the 2015 encyclical Laudato Si' (Care for Our Common Home). In his groundbreaking message nearly a decade ago, our Holy Father recognized the connection between care for the environment and care for humanity, especially the poor. Now his recent 2024 message on Hope and Act with Creation emphasizes an urgent need to respond to global warming impacts with unity, love, and a commitment to sustainable practices that honor both our faith and our environment.“As people who dare to dream, we must dream with our eyes wide open, impelled by a desire for love, fraternity, friendship and justice for all.” Read more...

ʻOhana Mass, Jul 27

Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu

From the Office for Social Ministry

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

"Making the Most of Moments" Seminar, Aug 10-17

Oahu: Saturday, August 17 at 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
St. Stephen Diocesan Center, Kaneohe

This session with presenters Paul & Sarah Jarzembowski will guide participants and facilitate dialogue around unpacking “moments of return” throughout the year, such as Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Easter, as well as weddings, baptisms, and funerals. We will also explore some less-obvious “moments” that reveal an overlooked abundance of occasions and opportunities upon which pastoral leaders, families, and concerned churchgoers can build. As Pope Francis notes, these “moments” can offer people “wellsprings of new life,” especially when we respond with intentionality, pastoral care, and a missionary spirit.

Saint of the Week

Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Late Twelfth – Early Thirteenth Century
Memorial – July 16

At the base of Mount Carmel, on the northwest coast of Israel, lies a Carmelite monastery named Stella Maris, Latin for “Star of the Sea.” This monastery is built over a cave believed to have been where the prophet Elijah, inspired by God, challenged 450 prophets of Baal in a contest to the death. Elijah triumphed. Shortly after, Elijah prophesied the end of a three-year drought when, in the passage above, his servant reported to him that he saw a “cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.” That small cloud quickly transformed into a heavy rainfall over the parched earth. Later Carmelites interpreted Elijah’s vision as a prefiguration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was seen as the small cloud rising from the sea, a true “Star of the Sea,” and the rain that would emerge from her to end the three-year drought was perceived as the grace and mercy poured out by her Son, Jesus.
