Dear Brookes Westshore Families and Friends,

We are coming to the end of the school year and our students are excited by the prospect of the summer holidays. There are still some summative assessments to complete for some students, but once they are done there will be a real sense of achievement and relief.

School life has been full of events and activities over the last couple of weeks – you can see many of these in the photos below.

As Head of School, it is always nice to receive feedback from the wider community, and this week I have had a couple of moments that have made me especially proud of our students and staff. Firstly, Max in grade six was singled out for praise by another school’s coach when he competed at the LIMSAA meet. We received this note:

Just wanted to congratulate your grade 6 male athlete who did an awesome job at all of the LIMSAA meets. To come out and perform with such grace and determination is commendable. Well done!

As you can see from the photos - Max’s classmates were cheering him along too!

I would also like to share a message we received from a community member this week – and publicly thank Jacob and Jayden for representing our school community so well:

I would like to give accolades to two of your employees. I only have their first names which are Jacob and Jayden. I had hit a curb which resulted in me blowing out my front passenger side tire, as I was trying to change it, Jacob came by and offered to get someone from maintenance to assist me, a few moments later he brought out Jayden who took over and got the tire changed and me on my way. I think that Brooke's Westshore should be very proud to have staff like these two.

Being a part of a supportive and caring community is so important to everyone here, and I am grateful to see that our staff and students live our values in the wider world.

With kind regards,

Jerry Salvador

Head of School

This was Pride Week and I want to congratulate those students who participated in planning the wonderful activities this week. The LGBTQ service club gets together every Thursday afternoon to plan school activities which promote an inclusive community and raise awareness.  They have done a wonderful job this year and the pride week is always a culmination of their year of work. We look forward to seeing them continue with this service club next year.

Our DP1 students have been very busy writing their end of year exams and it has been a stressful week for them. These exams help to prepare them for the upcoming year and will give them a better idea of their predicted grades.  We start providing an IB predicted grade for students in Grade 11 during term 3.  They will also receive an updated predicted grade on their Term 1 and 2 report cards in Grade 12. These predicted grades are most important for students who are applying to university as a Full IB Diploma student.  For course candidates (those students not enrolled in EE and TOK), it is their BC grades which are submitted to universities for admission purposes.

Some of the year end activities during the next couple of weeks includes:

  • June 17th Field Day at Juan de Fuca for Grade 4-5, MYP 1 and 2 during block 4 and 5.
  • June 17th  School Dance for MYP 3-5 and DP1, 1900-2300. Teachers and dormitory staff will be chaperoning.
  • June 20th The DP1 students will be travelling to Bamberton Park to complete their Group 4 (Science) project, which is a compulsory component of their final IB Grade.

Celebration of Learning Ceremonies

At the end of each year we hold a Celebration of Learning where students have the opportunity to share the highlights of the year and also receive IB Learner Profile awards and Gryphon Awards. The size of each ceremony prohibits us from inviting guests into the school and we do apologize.  We will take lots of pictures for the newsletter!

MYP 5 students hiked Mt. Finlayson last week.

MYP 1 students spent a day at the Beacon Hill park petting zoo for a fun field trip.

Brookes Westshore acknowledges that our school is on the traditional lands of the Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) and Lekwungen (Songhees) ancestors and families.
With gratitude, we live, work and learn here where the past, present, and future of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, faculty and staff come together.
