Bishop's Homily for the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

(ArtMari / Shutterstock.com)

[St. Roch Church, Kahuku (with Installation of Pastor)]

“They have no wine.” They have no housing. They have no hope. They have no motivation. They have no faith.

When the Virgin Mary saw that her friends who had invited her and Jesus to their family wedding were on the verge of a socially embarrassing crisis, she stepped in to intervene. Her initial efforts to involve Jesus in doing something to save the reputation of her friends were rebuffed, but she did not give up. And, of course, we see that not only did Jesus find a way avert the crisis by making wine from water, but its quality was better than the first wine, and its quantity was abundant, somewhere between 120 and 180 gallons! New Head of Catholic Charities Hawaii to Focus on Unity

With “a mix of emotion and a profound sense of responsibility,” Tina Andrade has taken the reins as president and CEO of Catholic Charities Hawaii.

Andrade’s ties to CCH run deep — in fact, her first job was working as a receptionist for Catholic Charities Hawaii, then called Catholic Social Service. She moved on to work in the Diocese of Honolulu’s Office for Social Ministry and then at parishes and schools across Hawaii; in 2003, she completed her “full-circle journey” and returned to CCH as its Catholic identity and mission director.

“Leading CCH feels somewhat natural due to my long history with the agency, but I consider it a sacred mission that I approach with great humility,” Andrade told the Hawaii Catholic Herald shortly after formally taking over leadership from Rob Van Tassell, who retired from his post after five years. Following the Light: Epiphany Reflections in the Jubilee Year

(KieferPix / Shutterstock.com)

From the Office for Social Ministry

“Let us pause to reflect on this image as we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord during this Jubilee of hope. It is bright, it is visible to all and it points the way.” Pope Francis’s Epiphany Homily 2025

The Feast of the Epiphany provides an opportunity to celebrate the beginning of this Jubilee Year in the hopeful light of the guiding star that led the magi to present their precious gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the vulnerable Christ-child Messiah-King and Holy Family gathered in a stable. Pope Francis invites us to reflect on ways we can also be a light to others that shines so bright, the spirit of Christmas can be manifested throughout the rest of the year.

Our Holy Father reminds us that the Epiphany (which means to “manifest or reveal”) is an action. At the beginning of this Jubilee Year, we are called to be living signs of hope, sharing the guiding light of Christ in our local communities here and around the world. Pope Francis reminds us that God’s light is “a different kind of light—the love of God, who became man.” He calls us to recognize that this light invites us to give of ourselves for one another, becoming signs of hope even in life’s darkest moments. Saint of the Week

Saint Marianne Cope
1838–1918
Memorial – January 23

Born in Germany, Barbara Koob was brought to the United States by her parents before the age of one. The immigrant family settled in Utica, New York, and joined Saint Joseph Parish where Barbara later attended grade school. After grade school, Barbara began working in a textile factory to support the family after her father became too ill to work. Despite her longing to enter religious life, Barbara continued to financially support her family for the next nine years.

In 1862, at the age of twenty-four, Barbara finally realized her desire for religious life by entering the Sisters of Saint Francis in Syracuse, New York. Read more...
