Keep up-to-date with what's been going on at Highgate Hill House School! New Principal updateHello all, Welcome back to you all after the half term break. The weather wasn't the best, but I hope you all enjoyed the time off and managed to get some well-deserved rest! As you know, I have now taken over as Principal of Highgate Hill House School as Gina has left to take on a new role in the South East to be closer to her family. We would like to take this opportunity to wish Gina well in her new role, and thank her on behalf of everyone at Highgate for everything she has accomplished in the last two years. I have just completed an extensive handover period with Gina over the half term break, and would like to reassure you all that our children are in very safe hands with myself and the rest of the HHHS team, plus support from the Melrose Education team behind the scenes. For those of you that don't know much about me, I joined HHHS as Deputy Headteacher a year ago, and have worked in education for 19 years, with 9 of those years spent working in school leadership roles. I am also just about to complete a Diploma with Trauma Informed Schools to become a TISUK Practitioner, so I look forward to being able to implement those learnings across the school, which will no doubt benefit of all our young people in some way. If you have any questions, or anything you would like to discuss with me, please don't hesitate to get in touch in the usual way: kerry.taylor@hhhschool.co.uk or 01288 341998. Warm wishes, Kerry Taylor Principal We are proud to have adopted the Halo codeOur workplace champions the right of staff to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black employees’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance. We celebrate Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps. You can find out more about the Halo code by clicking the button below. Keep your fingers crossed for us!As you may already know, we were recently shortlisted for a prestigious national award, based on a fire steel project led by Outdoor Instructors Ollie Norton and Kim Tester to ensure that two of our pupils with limited strength and motion were still able to take part. The award that we've been shortlisted for as a result of this project is the 'ISA Award for Excellence and Innovation in Equality Diversity and Inclusion'. The ISA awards ceremony will take place at Chesford Grange Hotel in Kenilworth, Warwickshire on 17th November, and as a result, education leaders and staff from independent schools across the country will be able to hear about our fantastic school. Regardless of the outcome on the night, to have been shortlisted for this award is a great achievement in itself and is testament to the hard work and support of all our governors, staff and parents. We are very proud! Happy Halloween! To get everyone in the mood for Halloween, we've been carving pumpkins, making scary pancakes and experimenting with special effects make-up! Supporting an 'autism sibling'Brothers and sisters of children with an autism diagnosis are in a unique, and often challenging position. They face difficulties similar to those that their parents encounter, but depending on their age, they may not have yet developed the understanding or appropriate coping strategies to deal with these difficulties. Our latest blog article discusses common sources of stress for brothers and sisters, and some helpful tips to help them feel like they are more than just the sibling of an autistic child.
