Click here Friday 6 September Message from the Executive PrincipalKia ora koutou, good afternoon, 下午好, 안녕하세요 It has been another typically busy week at Pinehurst, with our students learning, competing, performing, and playing—taking full advantage of all the opportunities the school has to offer. Our senior College students are now receiving valuable feedback from their mock examinations as they enter the final weeks of classes. It is important to focus on improvement moving forward rather than dwelling on past results. Between now and the final exams, there is plenty of time for progress, provided that there is the determination to explore every avenue in search of improvement. Last night, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Finding Nemo. The production was brilliant, with many smiling faces both on stage and in the audience, particularly among very proud parents. Our students demonstrated great courage and confidence and should be extremely proud of their journey. Putting on a show requires a tremendous amount of time and effort behind the scenes, and I am deeply grateful to all the staff who helped make such a wonderful performance possible. Earlier this week, the police contacted me regarding the Rosedale Road entrance. They asked me to remind you that when turning right into the school, you should queue on the median strip only and avoid blocking the main road. Additionally, please note that if you are waiting on the median strip, you are still considered to be driving, and the use of cell phones is prohibited. We’ve had a fantastic College tournament week, and while some teams are still in action, their performances so far have been impressive. Our golf team finished third, and our table tennis team came second, both in national competitions. Our hockey, badminton, and netball teams completed their tournaments today, and I will share their results next week. As we approach the end of the term, we are excited to hold our inaugural Year 13 Graduation Ceremony. This will be a significant occasion for the school as we celebrate our graduating class. A procession through the school will allow all the students to bid farewell to the graduates, and the parents of Year 13 students are invited to attend a formal ceremony in the auditorium. Traditions are important to communities, and these promise to be especially meaningful. Last weekend, I attended an independent schools conference, which I found engaging and informative. A key focus was on the impact of AI in schools, a topic that has already sparked important conversations here. It is clear that a generational shift is underway, with many young people turning to AI tools for emotional support. We will continue to explore this area to ensure we maintain close personal connections, ensuring that your children know our staff and their peers are here to support them. Due to last weekend’s bad weather, the final Kidzplay competition games were rescheduled for tomorrow. Best of luck to all the teams competing! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes, Mike Waller Dates for your DiaryMonday 9 September

Message from the Principal of CollegeTēnā koutou katao Feedback has been the order of the week for week 6, especially for students who have recently taken their mock examinations. Purposeful and constructive feedback is one of the most important aspects of effective teaching and learning, and we take feedback seriously at Pinehurst. When students are supported to understand where and how to improve, they can take ownership of their own learning and make steps to improvement. Following this week, students who are taking Cambridge examinations in October and November will be in a better position to plan strategies for their revision and they should ensure that they act on the advice and help from their teachers as they move forward. During the examination season it is timely to remind students of the importance of honesty, respectfulness and fairness in their study. A cornerstone of all educational establishments is academic integrity which enables growth in learning and accurate assessment. The courage to address wrongdoing is another aspect of academic integrity and I encourage all students to be truthful, fair, respectful and courageous as they journey through their learning. Winter sports tournament week saw many games hosted in Auckland this year and so we have been trying to take advantage of this and taken every opportunity to support our teams as they compete with school teams from across the country. We have competing teams in netball, badminton, hockey, table tennis, golf and climbing with netball, hockey and climbing all in Auckland. I have been lucky enough to attend some of the matches and see our students in action. Well done to all competitors, we are keen to hear about final matches at the end of today. We are looking forward to welcoming Year 6 students into the College on Monday as they start the transition from primary school to college life. We will hold several taster lessons so that students can get a feel for how things might be different in college. Good luck and best wishes to all Year 7 and Year 8 students who are attending AIMS games in Tauranga next week, we know you will make us proud and display our school values throughout the week. Have a lovely weekend. Ngā mihi nui Dawn Sullivan College NewsYear 10 Economics Students Dive into the World of Labour NegotiationsOur Year 10 Economics students recently delved into the dynamics of the labour market through a practical negotiation exercise. As part of their study on the roles of households, workers, and trade unions, students assumed the roles of employers and employees, negotiating first individually and then collectively as trade unions. The session sparked lively debates and intense negotiations, resulting in several successful agreements. This engaging exercise not only enhanced their understanding of economic interactions but also honed their negotiation skills, preparing them for real-world applications. Toi o te Wiki - LucyLucy Song, an AS Art and Design student, has beautifully captured the essence of her grandmother in a charcoal drawing. This impressive piece forms part of her preparatory work for the upcoming 15-hour examination. The portrait not only showcases her remarkable talent in charcoal technique but also sets a high standard as she progresses towards her examination. As they move into the production phase, their enthusiasm and dedication show, as students working on their unique products. The goal for the students is to support KidsCan to provide 150 hot meals and fund 20 weeks of breakfasts for those in need. Their hard work will be showcased at a market day on Wednesday 25 September, and open to students from Year 7-13. This event gives our Year 9 students a platform to sell their products and raise awareness and funds for an important cause. Please support our Year 9 students on this meaningful project, helping them make a significant impact in the lives of many children. Pinehurst Students in Pat Hanly Creativity ProjectRosie W and Hailey L have both been selected to have their artwork hanging in the Auckland Art Gallery as part of the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki 2024 Pat Hanly Creativity Project and Awards. As one of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s longest-standing creative youth art awards, this project celebrates our senior secondary school artists as well as one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most prolific artists: Pat Hanly. Three representatives from the Auckland Art Gallery came to Pinehurst to judge the awards. They were impressed by the creativity and skill level that all of the students have expressed, they selected based on a combination of creativity, authenticity, and skill displayed in the artwork. There were 22 artists selected from all of the Secondary Schools in Auckland. Below:
Bake Sale Raises $385.00 for Cancer SocietyFriday 30 August marked the Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Day. Because 1 in 3 will get cancer in their lifetime we wanted to contribute to raising funds by selling daffodils. Because everyone knows that the way to a teenager’s wallet is through their stomach, we wanted to do a bake sale but that’s a big job. Luckily, some great friends jumped on board to help, and we raised $385.00 during the lunchbreak for the Cancer Society. Thank you to everyone that supported us – Elizabeth, Amelia, Azita and Olivia, Year 7 and everyone who bought something from the bake sale. Pinehurst Students Play at Auckland Philharmonia 'Big Play In'Pinehurst Year 9 students Elvies Hu and Linda Liu joined the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra on Monday evening with their amazing cello and harp skills being great additions to the orchestra that evening. Students from all around Auckland were chosen for this event which involved 2 and a half hours of rehearsal before performing in the concert that evening. They performed works by Greig and Brahms and both thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Elvies, our cellist said “I especially enjoyed having the chance to play a little solo in one of the pieces and having the opportunity to be the section leader too.” Both students look forward to hopefully being part further Big Play-In” events next year and beyond. AAIMS Cross CountryThis week, two of our super star runners competed in the Auckland Intermediate Cross Country Championships after qualifying for this event at the North Harbour Intermediate Zone Day. This event was once again held out at Muriwai Beach which involves very rugged terrain and is a tough course. Anna L competed in the Year 7 Girls race and placed 58th overall and Noah R competed in the Year 7 Boys race and placed 33rd overall. Both students will be in action again this Sunday as they compete in the AIMS Cross Country event in Mount Maunganui before representing Pinehurst again in their other respective codes, Badminton for Anna and Hockey for Noah. Message from the Principal of PrimaryKia ora e te whānau Lights, camera, action and off to the Big Blue World of Finding Nemo Jr. Our Year 5 and 6 students have been practising for weeks now for their two shows and they truly did not disappoint. It was an explosion of colour, sound, lighting, dance, props, make-up, and spectacular costumes along with some of the best singing I have ever heard in a Primary production. Let’s not forget of course the talent of our students, it is hard to think that they are between the ages of 9 and 11 at times. They learned lines, songs, and choreography with ease as well as all the actions needed to make the story come to life. We are so proud of them and loved that the majority seemed to enjoy the experience of working together for a common goal. There were lots of happy memories made this week. Thanks as always to our students, staff, and parents for the effort and support you have given to our shows. A special mention to the following staff for their leadership of Finding Nemo Junior: Jack Taylor front of house; Sam Cunningham sound and lighting; Kirsty Robertson promotion and lighting; Nicola Everett props and sound; Rachael McKewen costumes; Jacqui Herbert costumes; Tanya Playfair costumes; Emily Markley props, hair, and make-up; Sophie Berry props and set; Jo Heighton choreography; Ashleigh Pope musical director, Keeva Shaw producer and Kelly Clark director. We also received support from parents and students with make-up and costumes and from staff who stayed to help behind the scenes both nights. It was the turn of Year 4 and P14 to host this week’s assembly and they did a wonderful job! They were very proud to show us their artwork and to talk about their favourite sports with a magic trick or two and exceptional musicians entertaining us as well. We all loved hearing what they had been up to in class as well as their many talents. There is lots of learning happening in P14, they just got their Maths Whizz pizza lunch too! The last three weeks of term will be focussed and largely uninterrupted and there is still plenty of learning happening across the school. We won’t slow down because it is the last week of term, and thankyou for minimising any disruption by not taking your children out of school early. We pride ourselves on getting the most out of every lesson and keeping the focus on explicit instruction so that our students make excellent progress in all aspects of the curriculum. Have a fantastic weekend. Ngā mihi, Sian Coxon Primary NewsWhere does our food come from?P12 have thoroughly enjoyed learning about where our food comes from during Global Perspectives. Through research we found the origin of food available locally and where most essential food is produced. Our research took us by surprise…we discovered that, India produces the most milk, China produces the most rice and Indonesia produces the most pineapples…Oh and there are lots more…We also learnt the benefits and issues related to international food transportation such as insects sneaking into food packaging as well as Global warming. While we get to enjoy a variety of food transported from other countries, there are risks we take too like the red tail spider getting into New Zealand from fruits and containers, usually those imported from Australia. Look at some of our learning. Carlo - I learnt that you need to buy what you only need and not waste food. Most food people expect it to come from certain countries but surprisingly it doesn’t for example I thought kiwi fruit comes from New Zealand, but in fact it came from China. Emma - Learning about the food miles and where food comes from. For example, the main one that stood out to me, I thought that milk came from New Zealand but in fact India produced the most milk. Oscar - Only to buy things on sale, to save scarce resources. Sidney - When food comes from further away, we risk an increase in Global warming and dangerous bugs and insects can get in transported food from far away places such as the Red back spider that go into New Zealand from food transport. Spanish UpdateKicking Off Spanish in Year 4 Classroom Objects in Year 5 Spanish Year 6: Body Parts in Spanish! Community News and EventsU14 NHHA Hockey Team SelectionSeveral of our talented students have been selected to represent our school in the U14 North Harbour Hockey Association (NHHA) team for the 2024 season. Following a series of trials, Taylan N, Noah R, and Ryan L from Year 7, along with Dominic B and Lachlan B from Year 8, have earned spots on this recognised team. Their selection is not only a recognition of their individual skills but also their ability to work as part of a team. They have competed in three matches against teams from Auckland, playing on a full-sized pitch with 11-a-side hockey. These matches have provided them with valuable experiences and opportunities for growth in their hockey journey. International Astronomy OlympiadKai Y was recently awarded an Honourable Mention at the 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) held in Brazil. This accolade is particularly significant as it was achieved by what the team leader, Karen, described as a "new" team. Expressing pride in Kai's accomplishment, Karen highlighted the significance of his achievement: "It's a great achievement for a new team." The family also shared their joy, stating, "We are so happy for him and appreciate all the support and encouragement from the school." Kai’s recognition at this prestigious international event underscores the potential and skill of New Zealand’s young scientists and serves as an inspiration to his peers and the broader community.
