Noah Feder, a Pitt medical student, calls working with CP3 his “favorite part of medical school.” He collaborated with Dr. Walid Gellad and former CP3 faculty affiliate Dr. Inma Hernandez for an examination of price changes of indomethacin suppositories. Noah’s first-author paper of that analysis has just been published in JAMA Network Open. Next, Noah teamed up with Dr. Jing Luo (CP3) and Dr. Margaret Zupa to examine trends in prescribing and reimbursement for glucagon following the introduction of newer delivery methods. Noah presented this work at May’s SGIM meeting in Boston, and a paper is under review.

Because of their work together, Noah nominated Dr. Gellad for the Medical Student Research Mentoring Merit Award. Dr. Gellad received the award at the 2024 Deans Summer Research Program (DSRP) Virtual Poster Symposium.

“This experience has reinforced my desire to pursue an academic career and has provided me with more opportunities than I thought were possible as a first-year medical student.” -Noah Feder

ISPE Annual Meeting

The International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE) 2024 Annual Meeting is always a big event for CP3. This year, it was held August 24-28 in Berlin, and Epidemiology PhD student Yilei Liu, CP3 Associate Director Dr. Katie Suda, and faculty affiliate Dr. Jenny Lo-Ciganic traveled to present their work. Dr. Suda presented her work on drug shortages (pictured below. left), and Dr. Lo-Ciganic showed work from her NIDA-funded DEMONSTRATE project. Meanwhile, Yilei’s poster, “Global trends in outpatient gabapentinoid utilization” was selected as a spotlight poster (pictured left), indicating that her poster was one of the top scoring posters! The group also caught up with other colleagues, including Anton Pottegård (University of Southern Denmark) and Mina Tadrous (University of Toronto) (below, center) and former CP3 postdoc Serena Guo (University of Florida) (below, right).

Evaluating a Cardiovascular Risk Calculator

CP3 Faculty Affiliate Dr. Tim Anderson talked with NBC News about his analysis of the new American Heart Association Predicting Risk of cardiovascular disease EVENTs (PREVENT) risk calculator. In a paper published in JAMA Internal Medicine, Dr. Anderson and team compared the PREVENT score with older guidelines and found far fewer patients met criteria for primary prevention statin therapy using their PREVENT score.

In the Media

CP3 researchers are at the forefront of using machine learning to develop and implement risk prediction models to improve patient care and reduce overdoses. Read more about the work of CP3 Director Dr. Walid Gellad and team in Pitt Med Magazine.

CP3 faculty affiliate Dr. Jenny Lo-Ciganic spoke with MedPage Today about her recent analysis that showed patients' use of first-line antidepressants was associated with decreased risk of falls compared to those who did not take antidepressants. Click here to read the paper in JAMA Network Open.

Pitt Pharmacy faculty and CP3 affiliate Dr. Luke Berenbrok is a champion for community pharmacists and an expert on access to pharmacies. Get to know him and his work in an interview with Pitt Med Magazine.

Dr. Katie Suda, CP3 Associate Director, shared her expertise on drug shortages with Spotlight PA. Read her insights on the causes of and possible solutions for the shortage of ADHD medications here.

Despite rising popularity of GLP-1 drugs, much uncertainty surrounds them, especially why patients stop or how long they should take them. "No one really knows how long you should be on these medications," CP3 Director Dr. Walid Gellad told Reuters.
