Dr. Azra Bihorac named senior associate dean for research affairs

Azra Bihorac, M.D., M.S., FCCM, FASN, the R. Glenn Davis Professor of Medicine, Surgery and Anesthesiology at UF, has been named senior associate dean for research affairs at the UF College of Medicine.

Bihorac takes over the role previously held by Stephen P. Sugrue, Ph.D., a professor of anatomy and cell biology at the college, who was appointed to the position in 2009 and will serve full time in his role as system-level associate vice president for research for UF Health.

MD-PhD student awarded Fulbright fellowship to conduct research in Ghana

Katelyn Flaherty, a fourth-year M.D.-Ph.D. student, was recently awarded a Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship from the competitive Fulbright-Hays Program, which will allow her to conduct a medical needs assessment and pilot a telemedicine and medication delivery service in Ghana, with the goal of improving the services available to low- and middle-income countries.

College of Medicine celebrates Gratitude Day

During Gratitude Day at the University of Florida College of Medicine on Oct. 28, college faculty, staff and students picked up a special-made chocolate featuring a gator to gift to a colleague for whom they’re grateful. 

As the teams at the UF College of Medicine know, working alongside others who are passionate about health care and improving others’ qualities of life makes the profession all the more fulfilling.  

In addition to sharing their appreciation for their colleague through a sweet treat, the College of Medicine family snapped photos to record the moment.

Building accountability teams to help launch strategic initiatives

As part of the next phase of the College of Medicine’s comprehensive strategic planning process, the dean’s office is building accountability teams under each of the plan’s seven pillars. The teams will serve as a resource to the project teams as each of the strategic initiatives is initiated. A mother’s love creates an enduring legacy

After suffering the devastating loss of her baby boy due to a congenital heart defect when he was only days old, Rosario Larrinaga endured despite the tragedy. For nearly 40 years, the Larrinaga family supported pediatric cardiology programs and research at UF in honor of their son’s legacy. A bequest made by Rosario Larrinaga, who passed away last fall at 93, has resulted in another generous gift to benefit pediatric cardiac research in perpetuity.

UF Health, Shriners Children's improve patient experience

Following an alliance between UF Health and Shriners Children's, a ribbon cutting recently took place to unveil the new pediatric orthopaedic practice space in Gainesville. Shriners support has provided funding for research, faculty and staff development, program and facility enhancements and continuing education related to the care of pediatric orthopaedic patients at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital and the UF Health Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Institute.
